Wolves and Crystal Palace aiming to cement Premier League safety
Wolves 0-0 Crystal Palace
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Wolverhampton, West Midlands, Molineux Stadium
Bet NowBoth Wolves and Crystal Palace have done well to steady the ship under new managers in recent times, with the two clubs now looking virtually safe this season, if not yet mathematically.
Wolves appointed Julen Lopetegui just before Christmas with the job of lifting the club out of the bottom three and building confidence once more.
The Spaniard has achieved that during his short time at the club and, although Wolves’ goalscoring still leaves a lot to be desired, the team is better in most areas of the pitch.
Crystal Palace, under the returning Roy Hodgson, have won three and drawn one of their four games, bumping their points tally and opening up a nine-point gap between themselves and the bottom three.
One or two wins from their remaining seven games will undoubtedly be enough to allow the club to plan for next season in the top division.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Won three of their last four home league games
And they kept clean sheets in all three victories
Reasons to be fearful:
Poor record against Crystal Palace
Will be disappointed to lose from a winning position against Leicester
After winning back-to-back games, Julen Lopetegui will be disappointed with how his side threw away a leading position against Leicester to lose the match.
The Foxes responded well in their first home game under Dean Smith, but Wolves will have felt that Leicester were there for the taking after storming into a first-half lead.
It was their lack of goalscoring ability that led to that defeat, as a more clinical team would have finished Leicester off.
As it stands, they probably need another two victories to be sure of survival this season and their home form has been good of late.
Star Man – Matheus Cunha
He took a while to get going, but the Brazilian signed from Atletico Madrid has steadily improved in recent games. His goal against Leicester means he now has two from his last five appearances.
Reasons to be cheerful
Won their last four against Wolves
Unbeaten in their last four in the league under Hodgson
Reasons to be fearful
Zaha likely to remain out injured
Just two wins from their last seven away games
Crystal Palace’s revival under Roy Hodgson continued at the weekend, with the Eagles going unbeaten in their fourth game consecutively.
They’ve won three of those games in emphatic fashion, scoring nine goals in the process but it was their organisation and defensive solidarity that came to the fore against Everton.
Their away form has largely been good this season, although they’ve won just two of their last seven. Should they find a way to win here, it could propel them above Chelsea into 11th and give them 40 points.
They are likely to remain without the injured Wilf Zaha here, although others have shown themselves to be key players in his absence.
Star Man – Michael Olise
When cutting in from the right with that sweet left foot, Olise can cause a range of problems for defences. Alongside Eze, Palace have plenty of quality going forward.
A tight game
Fewer than three goals in the game
First goal could win it
With a number of tight games taking place between teams near the bottom this week, Wolves and Crystal Palace won’t want to end up on the losing side here.
It’ll be a close game for that reason and could be one where both teams are happy with a point heading into the final few games of the season.
If either team can nudge in front, it could prove to be enough, but the likelihood is a draw.
Wolves 0-0 Crystal Palace
