Fulham to win 1-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Wolverhampton, West Midlands, Molineux StadiumBet Now
Wolves are in transition right now, looking to play a new style of football under Bruno Lage and seeking reinforcements to bolster their squad.
It’s therefore no shock that they lost to Leeds last weekend, although they did play well at times, scoring the first goal of the contest.
The arrival of Goncalo Guedes, for an estimated £27.5m, should happen this week, although he isn’t certain to play straightaway. They will need his pace and goals before long, however.
Fulham were impressive in their draw against Liverpool, surprising the giants with a positive display of pressing football and assured striking in front of goal from Mitrovic.
They will need a lot more of that as the season continues, but Fabio Silva’s side are set up to hurt teams this season.
This should be an interesting contest.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Played well despite defeat against Leeds
Won their last three league games against Fulham
Reasons to be fearful:
Without the injured Jimenez, where will goals come from?
Also missing players in midfield and at the back
Wolves have been famously difficult to play against since they were promoted to the Premier League in 2018.
That was under the management of Nuno Espirito Santo, who later left for Spurs, although Bruno Lage has continued to develop the team in his light since the start of last season.
They rarely score lots of goals, but they are usually tight at the back. That’s why it will worry Lage that they conceded twice last weekend.
Having let Conor Coady leave for Everton on loan, they could be short at the back. They’re also missing Moutinho in midfield through injury, as well as Raul Jimenez up front.
They’ll play tougher teams than Fulham this season, but they could struggle here nonetheless.
Star Man – Daniel Podence
The 26-year-old opened the scoring against Leeds last weekend, and the lively winger is one of Wolves’ best players in front of goal.
Reasons to be cheerful
Mitrovic is a handful when on form
Should be able to pick the same XI as last weekend
Reasons to be fearful
Poor record against Wolves
Last two Premier League seasons have ended in disaster
The last two seasons that Fulham have spent in the Premier League, they have been relegated.
One of the key reasons behind this has been the poor form of striker Mitrovic, who has failed to bring his Championship form with him into the top division.
Despite scoring 43 goals to help Fulham to promotion last season, there are still doubts as to whether he can perform in the Premier League.
His two goals against Liverpool last weekend will certainly help that.
They’ll need more than that to stay up this season, but they’ll have a chance.
Star Man – Aleksandar Mitrovic
Has the ability to score all kinds of goals, and bullied Liverpool’s defenders at times. Will need to show that consistently this season if Fulham are to survive.
Mitrovic will be a handle for Wolves’ defenders
Wolves could struggle to create chances
One goal could settle it
Games like this are often settled by a single goal.
That’s where top strikers come into their own, which is why Fulham will place their hopes on Mitrovic to finally come good in the Premier League.
He’ll never score 43 goals in a Premier League season, but if he could reach half that number, Fulham will enjoy a relatively successful season.
Wolves are still adjusting to a new style under Bruno Lage and are missing some key players. They could struggle here.
