Liverpool out to overturn poor form against battling Wolves
Liverpool to win 1-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Wolverhampton, West Midlands, Molineux Stadium
Bet NowWhile the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City challenge for the league title, Liverpool continue to drift in midtable, wondering how this season has spiralled out of control.
Jurgen Klopp’s men are suffering from a run of form as bad as we’ve seen from them since the German took over as manager. Fail to win here and it’ll be four consecutive league games without victory.
On the plus side, three points could take them as high as 6th depending on the results of other teams. They also have games in hand over the likes of Fulham, Brentford and Tottenham, all above them currently.
Wolves have been steadily improving since Julen Lopetegui took over the reigns just before Christmas.
They have won just three of their nine games under him, but they now look in good shape for the remainder of the season.
A positive result here would do them the power of good.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Won their last home game against West Ham
Gave Liverpool two good games in their recent FA Cup clashes
Reasons to be fearful:
Failed to score in 10 of their 20 games this season
Haven’t won consecutive league games since 2021
Wolves made six new purchases during the January transfer window, splashing out close to £75m in the process.
The team is badly in need of extra firepower upfront, although the majority of Wolves’ signings are in midfield or defensive roles.
They have a number of very talented, quick-footed individuals who can link up the play nicely but aren’t natural goalscorers.
The signing of Diego Costa hasn’t gone as planned, while Raul Jimenez is not the same player as he once was. Pedro Neto, Boubacar Traore, Chiquinho and Sasa Kalajdzic remain sidelined here through injury.
Wolves showed that they can match Liverpool in their FA Cup clashes, and will need to do so again here.
Star Man – Daniel Podence
The Portuguese forward is Wolves’ top scorer this season and seems their most likely route to goal. His quick feet can cause plenty of problems for Liverpool’s makeshift defence.
Reasons to be cheerful
Won their last 11 games against Wolves
A win could lift them to as high as 6th in the league
Reasons to be fearful
Could lose three consecutive away games for the first time since 2012
Kept just one away clean sheet from their nine games this season
Although half of the season remains, you feel that time is running out for Liverpool to make a push for the Champions League places, if they are indeed to do so.
As well as their dreadful form, results on the pitch have been made worse with a growing list of injuries that Jurgen Klopp has had to deal with.
Ibrahima Konate will now miss this game with a hamstring problem, joining the likes of Virgil van Dijk on the sidelines.
Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota are close to a return from their respective injuries, but still face another few weeks out.
Star Man – Mo Salah
Salah will make his 200th appearance for Liverpool against Wolves and has been one of the few shining lights for them this season. Even when not at his brilliant best, he’s still their main threat in front of goal.
Liverpool will edge possession
However, injuries at the back could hurt them
Wolves must be more ruthless in front of goal
You would think that Liverpool must start to improve at some point. Injured players will eventually return to the fold and out of form stars will pick themselves up.
That may be too much to ask here, with Wolves often a tough nut to crack at home. However, after a recent cup defeat, Klopp’s men will be keen to get back on the winning road.
Liverpool to win 1-0
