Champions Man City travel to resilient Wolves hoping to keep up pressure at the top
Manchester City to win 3-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Wolverhampton, West Midlands, Molineux StadiumBet Now
Manchester City must pick themselves up from the disappointment of drawing their last game, dropping two points against a battling Aston Villa side.
They returned to winning ways in their Champions League game in midweek, beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1.
We all know about the standards new signing Erling Haaland has set in terms of scoring goals, but the likes of De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva are in equally fine form. Can they return to winning ways?
Wolves recently earned their first win of the season, coming out on top in a tight game against Southampton. In truth, it is what their good play has deserved and they will now hope to push further up the table.
Can they play their usual game against a dominant City?
Reasons to be cheerful:
Last week’s win over Southampton will have boosted confidence
The signing of Diego Costa will add quality up front
Reasons to be fearful:
Could head into this game without a recognised striker
It’s not a good time to play Manchester City right now
Despite taking six games to find their first win this season, Wolves have continued to play some good football in each of their games.
Their three goals scored is the joint-lowest in the league. They have attempted to remedy that situation this week with the signing of Diego Costa, although the Spaniard has had little game time in recent months.
He will take time to get back up to the speed of the Premier League, although if he can recover some of his Chelsea form, he’ll help Wolves have a cutting edge up front.
Here, however, Wolves could line up without a recognised centre forward, with Raul Jimenez and new signing Sasa Kalajdzic missing through injury.
It’s a tough ask, but perhaps Wolves can prey on Manchester City’s weaknesses right now.
Star Man – Daniel Podence
The winger scored Wolves’ goal against Southampton to help them to their first win of the season.
Reasons to be cheerful
City’s best players are in exceptional form right now
Have the highest goal difference in the league with 14
Reasons to be fearful
Won’t have enjoyed being pegged back by Aston Villa last week
Have conceded in three of their last four against Wolves
Manchester City’s quality has been there for all to see once again this season, not only in the Premier League but also this week in the Champions League.
City went to Sevilla and blew them off the pitch, winning 4-0. This week, they beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1. Erling Haaland’s incredible goalscoring start to the season continued with a clinical finish.
Guardiola has brought in Swiss defender Manuel Akanji to help solidify his backline and it worked in midweek. Akanji has the quality to play alongside Ruben Dias at the back.
If City claim victory here, they could go above Arsenal at the top. With the form they are in, they may just hang onto it until the end of the season.
City have an excellent record against Wolves, winning each of their last four games. Can they continue that run here?
Star Man – Erling Haaland
Who else? It’s getting to the stage where you just expect him to score in every game he plays. With players like De Bruyne and Silva providing the assists, he always seems in the right place to slot the ball home.
City will largely dominate the ball
Who would bet against Haaland scoring?
Wolves are good on the ball and will back themselves to create a chance or two
We know that Manchester City will have the majority of possession, even away from home. The way in which they set up allows them to dictate the tempo of the game.
With the likes of Haaland up front, it only takes one ball into the penalty area for the opponent’s gameplay to go out of the window.
Wolves will try to prevent that and have the tools to cause Manchester City problems by moving the ball quickly through midfield.
Their main problem will be putting the ball in the back of the net with Jimenez and Kalajdzic both injured.
You feel Manchester City should win here.
