Drama followed as Daka landed awkwardly celebrating his goal, sparking concern in the stadium—but thankfully, he got up to finish the match, with no serious injury reported.

Zambia’s win mirrors their 2023 AFCON start, but back then a subsequent draw left them needing a win over Morocco to progress—they fell short and exited at the group stage. To avoid a repeat, Friday’s clash with Comoros is a must-win before facing Morocco again in the final group game.

Zambia’s hopes for a win hinge on Patson Daka's performance. Though not at his best, he delivered when it mattered in the opener with a goal, and more moments of magic will be needed on Friday night.

Comoros Preview

The 2021 AFCON “giant killers” couldn’t repeat their heroics on opening night, falling 2–0 to hosts and favourites Morocco. Still, Les Coelacantes earned credit by holding the Atlas Lions scoreless through the first half and restricting them to just one shot on target before the break. 

However, roared on by their home crowd, Morocco raised the tempo after the break, striking early in the second half and adding a quick second to snuff out any hopes of a Comoros comeback. Still, the Coelacanths had a moment to dream, only for Said Rafiki’s effort to be denied by Yassine Bounou.

Once again, Comoros find themselves in familiar territory—defeated in their opener, just as they were in 2021, before famously stunning Ghana 3–2. They’ll be eyeing another upset against Zambia, especially if they can shut down Patson Daka, the Chipolopolo’s main goal threat. Do that, and Comoros may well fancy their chances of nicking it by a single, decisive goal.

Though they struggled to threaten Morocco, Comoros still carry attacking bite through Myziane Maolida and Youssouf M’Changama. Maolida was their top scorer in World Cup qualifying, while the evergreen M’Changama—70 caps and counting—remains the creative heartbeat after leading the assist charts in qualifiers.
