Running parallel to Egypt vs Angola, Zimbabwe meet South Africa in Marrakech at 9:30 PM IST in a game loaded with consequence. Zimbabwe will keep one eye firmly on the other fixture, likely knowing only a win keeps their knockout hopes alive.

South Africa, though, arrive in a more comfortable position — despite a narrow loss to Egypt, their opening-day win means a draw should be enough to see them through.

Current Standings: Despite the defeat, South Africa continues to sit in the 2nd place in Group B, while Zimbabwe finds itself tied for points with Angola at third place.

Head-to-Head Record: South Africa come into this matchup with the upper hand, having won six of the 11 meetings between the sides, while Zimbabwe have managed just two victories.

Zimbabwe Preview

Once again, the Warriors lived up to their name at AFCON 2025, grinding out a hard-earned draw against Angola — a result they were denied earlier by Mohamed Salah’s stoppage-time winner. They impressed defensively despite facing around 15 attempts, and were just as sharp on the counter, even registering more shots than Angola.

Their resilience shone through as well, bouncing back from an early setback through Knowledge Musona’s equaliser. However, come Monday, a draw won’t suffice. The Warriors must strike first — and then defend with everything they have if they are to keep their knockout hopes alive.

Washington Arubi and Knowledge Musona were the standout performers for Zimbabwe against Angola. Arubi picked up where he left off against Egypt, delivering another superb display with five key saves — taking his tally to 14 across two matches. At the other end, the evergreen Musona led by example, scoring the equaliser and remaining a constant threat with five attempts on goal.

Zimbabwe Probable Starting Lineup - Washington Arubi (GK); Takwara, Hadebe,  Garananga, Godknows Murwira, Marvelous Nakamba, Fabisch, Jalai, Bonne, Msendami, Prince Dube.

South Africa Preview

The equation is clear for Bafana Bafana on Monday: a draw guarantees second place and a knockout spot, while defeat leaves their fate uncertain. Yet confidence remains high after their opening win over Angola and strong performances so far. Even against Egypt, South Africa dominated possession with 64% and pushed the Pharaohs hard, only to be undone by VAR decisions — a contentious penalty awarded to Egypt and a late handball appeal waved away.

That said, Bafana Bafana must sharpen their edge up front. Against Egypt, Lyle Foster appeared to shoulder most of the attacking burden, while Sithole was often the lone creative outlet in midfield. To add spark and unpredictability, Hugo Broos may need to turn to Relebohile Mofokeng, whose energy, creativity, and pressing could unsettle defences when it matters most.

Regardless of who Hugo Broos names in his XI, much will hinge on Ronwen Williams’ assurance in goal and Lyle Foster’s cutting edge up front — the striker already on the scoresheet in the opener — as South Africa prepare to face Zimbabwe.

South Africa Probable Starting Lineup - Ronwen Williams (GK) ; Khuliso Mudau, Aubrey Modiba, Mbokazi, Ngezana,  Sithole, Teboho Mokoena,Relebohile Mofokeng , Sipho Mbule, Moremi, Lyle Foster.

The last meeting came in October’s World Cup qualifier, when Zimbabwe held South Africa to a 0–0 draw. That result, however, won’t be enough this time. With the Warriors conceding in seven of their recent games and scoring more than once only once in that spell, the task looks steep.

In the meantime, South Africa may not need to force the issue, but their ability to punish mistakes tips the balance towards a Bafana Bafana win — or at least a draw.
