A clash of former champions is expected to be a mouth-watering encounter. The Pink Panthers went down fighting to the Puneri Paltan in their first game while the Bengal Warriors got the better of former champions Bengaluru Bulls.
Both teams have their own flavor. Bengal Warriors do not look very strong on paper, but their defense came the party in their first game of the season. Star raider and Captain Maninder Singh started off in style earning a Super 10.
On the other hand Arjun Deshwal scored 17 points in his first game and this is good news for the Pink Panthers. Unfortunately the Jaipur defense could not generate enough momentum and gifted points through the match. Left Corner Ankush who was the best defender of season 9 could not open his account. Right corner Sahul Kumar was sloppy though captain Sunil Kumar made the right moves.
Both teams will not be too worried about their unforced errors as this is just the beginning of the season.
The Bengal Warriors surprised themselves more than anyone else with a good performance in their first game. They beat the fancied Bengaluru Bulls. Captain Maninder was immaculate in his raids earning a Super 10. Bengal Warriors led at half time and then matched every move to maintain the lead as well as the pressure on their opponents.
Former Champions had a tough season last year but they seem to be relaxed and up to the mark. They have many young players in their squad who will be expected to support captain Maninder. Raiders Srikant Jadhav and S Vishwas complemented Maninder’s efforts. But what surprised everyone was the tenacity and precision with which left corner Aditya and right corner Shubham Shinde tackled the Bengaluru raiders.
Right cover Vaibhav Garje was over zealous on occasions earning him a green card, but that did not stop him from being aggressive. With a variety of raiding options available, Bengal Warriors seem to have rebooted themselves.
Surprisingly Bengal Warriors have dominated the Pink Panthers over the years. They have won 10 out of their 16 encounters which is quite impressive. Though the Warriors would like to forget season 9 as they lost both their league matches to the Pink Panthers.
Captain Maninder Singh has to carry the burden of the entire team. If incase he is trapped by the opposition, raiders Srikant Jadhav and Vishwas will have to adapt and take the lead. Young raider Suyog Gaikar and defender Darpan performed quite well in the first match, they will need to be consistent and aggressive.
The Warriors will aim to win their second game of the season, thus generating some momentum for this long tournament.
The defending champions got a taste of their own medicine as they lost their first bout to the Puneri Paltan. The Pink Panthers had beaten the Paltan last year to claim the crown.
Arjun Deshwal was impressive in his first match as he pounded the opposition with 17 points. He was supported well by veteran Ajith but the Pink Panthers missed out on an effective third raider. They tried to use Rahul Chaudhary and Jai Bhagwan but it did not bear any fruit.
The Pink Panthers led by halftime but surprisingly they earn just 1 tackle point in the first half. That proved to be the issue as the Paltan came back strongly in the second half to exploit the fragile Jaipur defense. Though Arjun Deshwal continued to earn points from raids, the defense could not keep pace with him. This resulted in the Pink Panthers conceding two all-outs in the second half and that proved to be the final nail in the coffin.
Though Jaipur will not worry too much as it was their first game of the season. They will give their defenders some time to settle and resonate. But the Pink Panthers need to improve their backup raiding so as to support the efforts of Arjun Deshwal.
Left corner Ankush needs to gear up as he did last season. But Ankush is known to be a slow starter. Once he gets his rhythm, he is unstoppable. He executed 84 successful tackles last year which included 9 Hi-5’s which was a record of sorts.
The Pink Panthers do not have a great record against the Bengal Warriors. They beat them twice during the league games last year, but overall they have won just 6 out of their 16 encounters. With a fragile defense, Jaipur will have a tough time hunting Maninder Singh who has scored a Super 10 in his first game for Bengal Warriors.
This match will also test the skills of defenders Shaul Kumar and Iranian defender Reza Mirbagheri. As a desperate attempt, the Pink Panthers tried left corner Ashish instead of their regular left corner Ankush but it didn’t work. Hence this match will be crucial for Jaipur to get their house in order.
Clash of the former champions will be quite exciting and entertaining. Jaipur Pink Panthers have to recover from their loss against the Puneri Paltan. Raider Arjun Deshwal will score another Super 10 but he will not get enough support from other raiders. Captain Sunil Kumar will be effective but he needs to make sure that he is not off the field for long. Defenders Shaul Kumar and left corner Ankush will be sloppy but they will perform better that the last match.
The Bengal Warriors will work together and isolate the second and third raiders of the Pink Panthers. Captain Maninder will score a Super 10 and Srikant Jadhav will support him. Bengal Warriors will trouble the Pink Panthers with their defense. Both their corner cover combinations are dangerous and Bengal will exhibit a high success rate in team tackles.
Jaipur need to regulate their unforced errors else the defending champions might have to wait for another match to earn their first points of the season.
Bengal Warriors will win.
