Welcome to the eliminators as the Gujarat and Haryana slog it out for a spot in the semi-finals. Both teams finished with 13 victories in this season. The winner of this bout will take on the Puneri Paltan in the first semi-finals. Both are evenly matched with team work as their strength and their defensive lapses as their weaknesses.

Both teams lost their last league match of the season. The Steelers got hammered by the Bengaluru Bulls while the Gujarat Giants lost to the Jaipur Pink Panthers. Both teams depend on their trio of raiders. Gujarat is heavily dependent on Prateek Dahiya, Rakesh and Sonu while Haryana need the services of Vinay, Shivam Patare and Siddharth Desai. Raider Vinay has earned 137 raid points this season, else none of the above raiders are in the top 10. Hence this will be an interesting match-up as both teams will expect their raiders to give their best performance. Captain Fazel Attrachali leads the defense for Gujarat while Captain Jaideep has been the motivator for Haryana. Jaideep has executed 60 successful tackles in 20 matches. But Fazel Attrachali is the master of deception.

Hence this eliminator will be one of the most entertaining encounters of the season. Haryana has defeated Gujarat twice in the league stage. Hence this will be an opportunity for redemption for the Giants. But it will not be a cakewalk for Gujarat as they will be up against the unpredictable Haryana Steelers.

Gujarat Giants Preview

Gujarat Giants have been the silent killers this season. They started with a wobble in their first few matches but woke up in time. They went on to win 13 matches in the season. Mid-season, they looked fatigued and out of resources, but they managed to recover in time. They have reached the eliminators even though none of their raiders or defenders are in the top 10. This indicates that the Giants operate as a unit and they are not severely dependent on any one player. Captain Fazel Attrachali has led the side with class and strategy. He got good support from defenders like Sombir who has been ruthless with his tackles. The introduction of right cover Dipak Singh and all-rounder D Balaji has helped the Giants strengthen their defense.

Their success rate in team tackles was around 35% mid-season. But they managed to improve it to about 42% by the end of the league stage. This is their strength.

Gujarat Giants know that they do not have superstar raiders in their squad. Hence their efficiency in team raids is about 35%. This record is not impressive but the Giants have compensated for this with some tactical brilliance. They have inflicted 31 all-outs and have executed 17 Super raids which is the highest by any team. Their raiders may not score heavily but they execute surprising big raids at crucial moments of the match. Raider Prateek Dahiya has earned 124 raid points in 21 matches while Rakesh has earned 103 points in 20 matches. By playing within their limitations, the Gujarat Giants have managed to con their opponents.

Gujarat Giants lost to the Haryana Steelers twice this season. They lost their first league match by a margin of just 2 points. It was a low scoring match where the Steelers held their nerve to emerge as winners. Gujarat faltered once again in another league encounter as they lost to the Steelers by margin of 4 points. Historically, Haryana has dominated Gujarat in the PKL. Gujarat has won just 4 out of their 14 encounters with the Steelers. Gujarat has won just 2 out of their last 6 bouts with Haryana. Hence this eliminator will be a tough one for the Gujarat Giants. Captain Fazel Attrachali will expect their defense to be rock solid. Even if the raiders are not able to earn lot of points, Gujarat has to be careful, not to leak points via their defense. Slowing down the pace of the game is their strength and Gujarat needs to plan tactically to avenge their defeats in the league stage. This will be the toughest bout for the Giants.

Haryana Steelers Preview

The Haryana Steelers peaked at the right time to jump the queue and enter the race for the semi-finals. They won 13 out of their 22 matches. Fortunately, they had played lesser games as compared to other teams as they reached Panchkula for the final leg of the league stage. They won 2 out of their last 4 matches to reach the 5th spot in the points table. They will take on the Gujarat Giants in the first eliminator.

Haryana Steelers struggled with their raiding throughout the season. They drafted raiding sensation Siddharth Desai in the auctions for an unbelievable price. Unfortunately, Siddharth could not fire in the first few games. Hence coach Manpreet had to revert back to veterans like Chandran Ranjit for his raid earnings. Fortunately, young raiders like Vinay and Shivam Patare grabbed the opportunity as both scored 233 raid points collectively in 20 matches. This came as a relief to Haryana. With their ticket booked for the eliminators, Haryana tried out young raiders like Tejas Patil and Vishal Tate in their last few league matches. This will surely help coach Manpreet to weave an unbeatable combination against the Gujarat Giants.

Haryana Steelers achieved a success rate of about 35% by the end of the league stage. Vinay is in the top 10 list of raiders but overall Haryana does lack the sting in their raiding. Their main weapon is their defense. With an efficiency of 44% in team tackles, Haryana has been able to beat the best in the business. Captain Jaideep and right cover Mohit Nandal have been their pillars. Jaideep has executed 60 successful tackles in 20 matches while Mohit has contribute with 56 successful tackles in 21 matches. The Haryana defense has executed 33 super tackles which is the highest by any team. But this also proves that time and again the Steelers have very few players on the mat.

Another area of concern for the Steelers is that they have inflicted 27 all-outs but they have also conceded 33. Hence their opponents push them to the wall by inflicting all-outs at crucial moments. The Steelers will have to insulate themselves for these issues. Haryana has a wonderful track record against the Gujarat Giants. They have won 9 out of their 14 encounters against the Giants. Haryana has a clean record against Gujarat in this season too. Hence this will be a wonderful opportunity for the Steelers to complete a hat-trick of victories against Gujarat and book their ticket for the semi-finals.

Welcome the second eliminator of this season as the Gujarat Giants take on the Haryana Steelers. Both teams are equally matched with the Haryana Steelers having a slightly better defense. Fazel Attrachali will resonate with Sombir to trap the Haryana raiders. One of them will score a Hi 5. But Gujarat will have issues with the supporting raiders. Gujarat might be a slow in the first half, but they will intensify their tackles in the last 20 minutes. Raiding will be a concern but Prateek Dahiya and Rakesh will impress with their skills. None of the Gujarat raiders may score a Super 10.

Haryana will face a similar issue with their raiding. Coach Manpreet might introduce young raiders like Tejas Patil to shock their opponents. Captain Jaideep and Mohit Nandal will trap the Gujarat raiders effectively. Defenders Monu Hoodan and Naveen Kundu will surprise the Giants. This will be an interesting match which may witness a Super raid, a Super tackle as well as a few all-outs. The last 10 minutes of the match will be a street fight. It is quite difficult to predict but the Haryana Steelers have a very slight advantage.

Haryana Steelers will win.
