One of the biggest rivalries of PKL is between U Mumba and the Gujarat Giants. Any contest between them is a high octane, entertaining and exciting one. Gujarat have made a brilliant start to their campaign by winning their first 2 games effortlessly. U Mumbai has also won its first match of the season as they beat UP Yodha.

This western derby will be one of the most fiercely contested game as Fazel Attrachali will be playing against his former teammates. His tactical brilliance was quite evident in their first 2 matches as Gujarat strangled their opponents like a venomous python.

The Gujarat Giants announced their arrival in style a few years back as they reached the finals in consecutive seasons. They had a forgetful season 9 but they seem to have prepared for the long arduous battle of season 10. Gujarat beat the Telegu Titans in their first game, followed by a spirited victory over the Bengaluru Bulls. 

On both occasions, they used a similar strategy. They trailed at halftime in both games only to bounce back and shock their opponents. This is a typical Fazel Attrachali mode of operation. They follow their prey till halftime and then make some surprise moves to hunt their opponents. In both games, the Giants inflicted a couple of all-outs thus rendering their opposition completely out of the game.

Young raider Sonu took his chances and emerged as the biggest weapon for the Giants. He has scored a Super 10 in both the games. Raider Rakesh in the supporting role has been efficient. But the biggest asset for the Gujarat Giants is the “Sultan” Fazel Attrachali.

The legendary player has made all the difference to the team and his presence has given the Giants a unique edge. He is the best defender in the history of PKL and his tactical inputs are extremely useful for the young teammates. Attrachali used his charisma similarly for U Mumba when they won the second season.

All-rounders Nabibaksh and Sahil Gulia have been extremely precise with their tackles along with defender Sombir. This trio makes it almost impossible for opposition raiders to win points. That is the reason why the Telegu Titans and Bengaluru Bulls had a low success raid percentage against the Gujarat Giants. 

Gujarat Giants have a better record over U Mumba as they have won 7 out of their 12 encounters with one ending in a TIE. The Giants have the momentum very early in the season and they will look forward for a hat-trick of victories.

U Mumba Preview

Former Champions had an auspicious start to the season as they beat the mighty UP Yodha in their first match. U Mumba does not have many superstars in their squad but they are guided by Iranian coach Ghulamreza who has given them a different twist. He unleashed young Iranian all-rounder Zafardanesh who scored a Super 10 in his first game.

U Mumba used a unique strategy as they trapped UP raiders Pardeep Narwal and Surinder Gull and kept them off the mat for long time. That reduced the scoring opportunities for the Yodha who lost the match by 3 points. The Mumba defense was quite proactive in its tackles as right corner Rinku Singh was in devastating mood. He was supported nicely by all-rounder Visvanath and left cover Mahender Singh. Captain Surinder Singh was good in patches as he made many unforced errors throughout the match.

An encounter with their arch rivals will certainly spruce up U Mumba. They will be up against their former captain Fazel Attrachali who has quickly settled into the Gujarat camp. Mumba coach Gholamreza will also have a trick up his sleeve to neutralize Attrachali. 

U Mumba have the services of young raiders Guman Singh and Jai Bhagwan. They also tried Pranay Rane for a brief period in their first game. They will expect left corner Girish Ernak to gain form at the earliest. He was a bit sloppy in the first match. Girish Ernak is one of the best defenders on the circuit and his tackles can be crucial in stopping the Gujarat raiding storm.

Mumba performed better with their defense during critical moments in their match against the UP Yodha. They need to be tight while trapping the Gujarat raiders as U Mumba has faltered under pressure against their arch rivals. 

U Mumba has won just 4 out of their 12 encounters with the Giants. This encounter will test their resolve as well as their tactical prowess.

Winning Prediction

The western derby will be a treat for all the kabaddi fans as the Gujarat Giants take on arch rivals U Mumba. The Giants will continue to employ their typical hunting tactics. Captain Fazel Attrachali will target Mumba raider Guman and Zafardanesh. All-rounder Arkam Shaik will be crucial to this strategy along with defender Sombir. 

Gujarat will unleash young raider Sonu who will exploit the fragile left corner areas of Mumba. The Gujarat defense will be too hot to handle for U Mumba raiders. 

U Mumba will play along through the first half. They will try to increase the intensity and slow down the Giants. Mumba needs to be careful about their unforced errors as historically they have lost close matches to Gujarat Giants. Right Corner Rinku Singh will target raider Sonu in-order to reduce his scoring chances. Left cover Mahender and Defender Visvanath will play a crucial role in the first half as Mumba will take the lead.
