The table toppers of season 10 get ready to wrestle with 3 time champions Patna Pirates as the SDAT Indoor stadium in Chennai. Puneri Paltan is by far the best team of the league with 5 victories from their 6 matches. They enter the mat as if it’s the finals of season 9 which they lost. It left a huge scar on them which is quite visible in this season.

The Patna Pirates are a shadow of the past. They seem to be playing just above average in this season too. They have won 3 out of their 6 matches and their fans are expecting more from the team. The Patna Pirates defeated the Tamil Thalaiva in their last match. Young raider Sudhakar impressed everyone with his skills as he scored a Super 10. The Puneri Paltan blanked out the Bengaluru Bulls by a margin of 25 points as their defense was hot and spicy. The Patna Pirates may feel the heat when they take on the Paltan. The Pirates have dominated the Paltan in the league with 13 victories out of their 19 encounters. But Patna has not defeated the Puneri Paltan since season 8. This will be an entertaining encounter.

Puneri Paltan Preview

Runners up of season 9 look determined and dangerous. They are the leaders in the points table with 5 victories out of their 6 matches. The Puneri Paltan looks the most sorted team in the league with a spicy defense along with youthful raiders. They have maintained the core team from season 9. But their most lethal addition was when they signed up Iranian all-rounder Mohammedreza during the auctions. He has made a huge difference to their sharpness in the defense.

With 23 successful tackles in 6 matches, Mohammedreza leads the pack among all teams. He scored 6 tackle points from 8 attempts along with a touch points in one of his raids. Right corner Gaurav Khatri has been menacing with his blocks while Abhinesh and Sanket Sawant have been consistent. With such a tight defense, it is almost impossible to get past the Paltan. With a 54% efficiency in team tackles, the Puneri Paltan has 12 all-outs in 6 games which is the highest among all teams.

The raiding department is led by captain Aslam Inamdar along with Mohit Goyat. They may not score massive Super 10’s but the Paltan works as a unit while decimating their opponents. Aslam and Mohit have scored 83 raid points in 6 matches. Pankaj Mohite has executed the supporting role perfectly, hence the trio of Puneri raiders end up earning enough to win the match. The Paltan will be up against the Patna Pirates who have dominated them over the years. But since season 9, Patna is a shadow of its past. The Paltan has won just 3 out of their 19 encounters. But Puneri Paltan dominated season 9 where there won both their league games against the Pirates. Pune is much better placed in this match against the Pirates.

Patna Pirates Preview

3 time champion, Patna Pirates have performed below average this season. They are placed 6th in the points table with a 50% success rate in their matches. The Pirates were conned twice earlier in the month when they lost to U Mumba by 2 points followed by a 1 point loss to the Jaipur Pink Panthers. Patna lost to some last minute tactical blunders in both these games. They had a better outing against the Tamil Thalaiva as they won the match by a margin of 13 points.

Their major concern is their raiding. Sachin Tanwar was expected to lead the attack with loads of raid points but unfortunately he has not fired on all cylinders. He has earned 57 raid points from 6 matches which includes just 3 Super 10’s. Support raiders Sandeep Kumar and M Sudhakar have impressed but they need some more time to settle down. Their role seems to be unclear as they are playing second fiddle to Sachin and still they have to lead the attack. Hence both youngsters need to be used effectively. The Pirates have a major issue with their defense. Captain Neeraj Kumar form has been up and down while defenders Ankit and Manish have been decent. Defender Krishnan has been the lone warrior with 18 successful tackles in 6 matches. Patna Pirates have not found a decent replacement for Iranian Mohammedreza.

Though the Pirates have executed 116 successful raids, it has not been complemented by their defense. Hence all the hard work in the raids is not being converted into victory for the team. Their success rate in team tackles is just about 36%. Though the Pirates have inflicted 9 all-outs, they have also conceded 7. Hence their raiding and defense is not resonating.

They will be up against the inform Puneri Paltan who are at the top of the points table. Though the Pirates have dominated the Paltan, this was only till season 8. Since then the Puneri Paltan has troubled the Pirates in every match. This will be an important encounter for the Pirates as they need to win this desperately to float higher in the points table.

The contest between the Puneri Paltan and the Patna Pirates will be full of fireworks. Chennai will witness celebrations in advance for the new-year as this will be a face-off between the young raiders of Patna Pirates and their former colleague Iranian Mohammedreza.

The Pirates will be heavily dependent on Sachin Tanwar who will struggle against the Puneri Patlan defense. He may not score a Super 10. But raiders Sudhakar and Sandeep Kumar will score collectively. But that may not be enough. They have to be careful against Mohammedreza and right corner Gaurav Khatri. The Patna defense may not be able to stop Puneri raiders Mohit and Aslam. Even if they do tackle them early in the first half, they may not be able to maintain intensity in the second. Puneri Paltan will score quickly and lead by half-time. The second half may witness a lot of unforced errors from Patna but the Puneri defense may gift some points. Hence this will be a high scoring affair but the Pirates will struggle to keep up with the Puneri bandwagon.

Puneri Paltan will win.
