It is always difficult to choose when contesting teams have been erratic, inconsistent, and yet to win a match in the season. Both Patna Pirates and Tamil Thalaiva face an uphill task in season 9. Former Champions Patna Pirates look like a shadow of themselves while the Thalaiva is yet to get over the loss of Hi flyer Pawan Sehrawat who was injured in their first match.
The Thalaiva dreamt of riding the Pawan wave while the Pirates thought that they could recreate the magic of the last season. Both teams have been rendered heartbroken. Patna Pirates were thrashed by the Bengal Warriors in their last game as they were sent packing 4 times in the match in terms of being all out. Such was the mess in the Pirate defense that the Warriors looted raid points at will.
The Thalaiva lost to U Mumba by a margin of 7 points, this was a match they should have won as they were leading in the first half. A sudden breakdown due to an all-out left them sulking and they could never recover. Successful team raids were an issue with them. As both teams clash, the priority for both would be to repair the damage done in earlier games and win their first game of the season.
The Thalaiva has always been an underachiever at the PKL. They have been able to win just 15 games out of the 66 that they have played. The team was introduced in 2017 but their best performance was finishing 6th in seasons 5 and 6. Every season their fans expect a miracle but it looks like they are stuck in an arid zone.
This season the Thalaiva was expected to ride the Pawan wave but destiny had something else for them. High flyer Pawan who averages around 13 points per game was injured in a freak accident in his first match. The Thalaiva has not been able to recover from this jolt.
They lost to U Mumba in their last game after leading in the first half. The team has not been able to resonate as their raiders and defenders falter alternately. In the absence of Pawan, they are forced to rely on rookie raiders like Himanshu Narwal, Narender, and Ajinkya Pawar.
Right corner Sagar is the lone warrior as he has to lead a weak defense. He was one of the top defenders of season 8 and he continues to deliver this season too. He along with Sahil Gulia has conducted 16 successful tackles in 3 games collectively. But there isn’t much support. Raider Narender was impressive against U Mumba as he earned 15 raid points.
The Thalaiva needs to rise from the ashes like a phoenix. They have an extensive and emotional fan base who expect them to fight till the end. Tamil Thalaiva were forced to settle for a TIE in their first game and they lost the next 2 games. But their performance has been good in patches. They have a golden opportunity to open their account against the erratic Patna Pirate side.
3-time champions and runners-up of season 8 find themselves in an unusual situation as they are yet to open their account in season 9. The Pirates have gone off course as they are placed last in the points table after playing 4 games. It is hard to digest the fact that they got hammered by the Bengal Warriors in their last game by a huge margin of 28 points.
This season has been an anti-thesis for the Pirates. Their core team is more or less the same as season 8. Raiders Sachin Tanwar, captain Neeraj Kumar, Defenders Sunil, Iranian Mohammedreza, Rohit Gulia, and Sajin. But they seem to be like tourists lost in a wonderland.
Patna Pirates were all-out 4 times in their last match which was shocking. They have conceded 153 team points this season which is the highest while conceding 8 all-outs. Pirates had to settle for a TIE against the Puneri Paltan in their first game and since then they have been thrashed by Jaipur Pink Panthers, Bengal Warriors, and even the Telegu Titans.
Coach Ravi Shetty has an uphill task on hand as he has to motivate his players as well as get a decent team combination going. They need to reboot and operate as per their current form. Patna Pirates cannot rely on past glory as they are yet to win a match this season.
They have the options of young players like raiders Monu and defender Sukesh Hegde. But they do not have great bench strength this season. Raider Sachin Tanwar has not been able to recreate the magic of season 8 or the way he used to operate for the Fortune Giants. The Patna Pirates have a golden chance to get back on track as they take on an erratic Thalaiva who does not enjoy a great record against them.
Expect a high-scoring game as both sides have a brittle defense. While Patna Pirates could earn just 7 tackle points in their last game, the Thalavia earned 8 against U Mumba. Patna Pirates captain Neeraj Kumar has to deliver while right corner Sunil and left corner Mohammedreza have picked up form. All-rounder Sajin is the key to their success against the Thalaiva.
Tamil Thalaiva has to unleash their young rookie raiders like Narender and Himanshu and move away from their defense-heavy tactics. Captain Sagar will be crucial to trap the Pirate raiders while covers Mohit and Abhishek have to make sure that Sachin Tanwar is kept off the mat for a long time.
Both teams need to win this desperately as a victory in this game will give them some momentum for the season.
Tamil Thalaiva will win.
