Welcome to the clash of former champions at the DOME at Mumbai. While the Bengaluru Bulls are struggling to stay afloat in season 10, U Mumba has recovered from its initial debacles. Mumba is placed 6th in the points table after playing 7 matches. They have won 5 games in season 10 while the Bengaluru Bulls are placed 8th in the points table with just 4 victories out of their 10 matches.
The Bulls are struggling a lot as they have not been able to build any momentum. They somehow managed to defeat the Tamil Thalaiva by just 1 point in their last match. None of their raiders could score a Super 10. They were trailing by half-time and a tactical blunder in the last raid by the Thalaiva helped them cross the finish line. Bengaluru witnessed usage of too many players which was a desperate measure by their coach. U Mumba thrashed the Telegu Titans by 18 points in their last match. It was teamwork personified by U Mumba as defenders Rinku and Sombir blasted Telegu Titans with their lethal tackles. Both scored 8 tackles points each. Hence the clash of the former champions at Mumbai is heavily tilted towards the home side.
Home side U Mumba is in a buoyant phase in season 10. After an inconsistent start to the season, they are peaking at the right time. They have won 4 consecutive matches and have moved to the 6th spot in the points table. They have also played only 7 matches till now which is 3 lesser than the Bengaluru Bulls. Mumba had a lot of issues with its team combination. Though they have persisted with the raiding combination of Guman Singh, Zafardanesh and Jai Bhagwan, the trio has been generally inconsistent. None of these raiders are in the top 10. The trio has recorded just 6 Super 10’s in 7 matches. Hence the raiding income has always been a worry for U Mumba.
But their fortunes have changed over the last 4 matches. After they lost to the Puneri Paltan early last month, they have defeated the Patna Pirates, Tamil Thalaiva, Bengal Warriors and the Telegu Titans. This proves that U Mumba have revitalized themselves. They won their bout against the Bengal Warriors purely due to teamwork. None of their raiders scored a Super 10, but collectively they earned 20 raid points in the match. the Mumba defense was spicy as they Left cover Mahender Singh scored a Hi 5 and defender Rinku earned 4 tackle points. U Mumba has realized that they cannot afford to depend on any one player and their success is possible only if the entire team resonates. Defenders Rinku and Sombir were ruthless against the Telegu Titans as they earned 16 raid points between them. Rinku was lethal with his tackles as he earned 8 points from 6 tackles. This counter attack took the steam out of the Telegu Titans. U Mumba inflicted 3 all-outs in the match thus winning it by a margin of 18 points. This victory was a confidence booster for the former champions.
With the momentum as well as the match on their home-turf, U Mumba will be ready to face the Bengaluru Bulls. Mumba has dominated the Bulls over the years, winning 13 out of its 18 encounters. U Mumba did not lose to the Bulls in season 8, while in season 9 they shared the honors in 2 matches. This match is the best opportunity for U Mumba to decimate the out of form Bengaluru Bulls and gain crucial points. Their raiders are looking impressive while their defense has become their strength. Captain Surender Singh needs to be more precise and consistent. U Mumba has also perfected the art of hit and run. They start the match aggressively and by taking a huge lead by half-time they push their opponents towards a dead end. Mumba will follow similar tactics against the Bengaluru Bulls.
The Bengaluru Bulls have been through a disastrous season. They are totally out of sync and out of ideas. Former champions are placed 8th in the points table after playing 10 matches. They have been able to win just 4 matches this season. Most of their time is utilized in trying out different players as most of their playing 7 is out of form. The raiding has been inconsistent while their defenders have been slippery. The Bulls have an efficiency of just about 33% in team raids while their success rate in team tackles is about 43%. One can still say that their defense has been a face saver. But their biggest concern has been their raiding.
Vikash Kandola was drafted in the side post the auctions. But he has been out of form. Vikash has scored just less than 50 raid points in 10 matches. Raider Bharat Hooda has been operating like a one man army. He has earned 79 raid points in 10 matches. But without much support from other raiders, his efforts have gone down the drain. Bengaluru has tried to use Neeraj Narwal as their third raider without much success. They do not have too many raiders in their squad, hence they can’t experiment with too many players. Their fans would be disappointed by their rigidity in not changing their raiding strategy. The Bulls had to work overtime to beat the Tamil Thalaiva in their last match. They got lucky as the Thalaiva committed a tactical blunder in their last raid to gift the match to the Bulls by just 1 point.
Fortunately, it was their defenders who saved the day for them. Prateek and captain Sourabh Nandal scored 4 tackle points each while veteran Surjeet earned 3 tackle points. Another major concern for the Bulls is that they have conceded 353 team points in 10 matches which is very high. They have also conceded 15 all-outs which keeps them in panic mode. Since their raiding has not been spicy, they are constantly changing the players through the match. This does not all them to build a stable combination. The Bulls have already played 10 games which leaves them with very little time to regroup and recover.
The Bulls do not enjoy a great record against U Mumba. They have won just 5 out of their 18 encounters with Mumba who will playing in front of their home crowd. This will be another tough match for the Bulls and possibly the last match for them to make a grand comeback in the season.
U Mumba will be eager to hit the mat in 2024 on their home turf. On the other hand, the Bengaluru Bulls will be eager not to lose another match in the season. Even after a below par performance by their raiders, the Bulls may not change the combination. Bharat Hooda will be their most effective raider. Vikahs Kandola and Neeraj Narwal may not contribute much. But the biggest challenge will be posed by the Mumba raiders. Hence this will be a difficult match for Bulls captain Sourabh Nandal and his band of defenders. Prateek and Surjeet will hunt successfully but their major concern is the left corner. Ran Singh is in the twilight of his career. Hence the Bulls may leak a lot of points.
U Mumba won’t be worried as Guman Singh and Zafardanesh will earn handsomely through their raiding. Mumba will take the lead by half-time. Their biggest asset is left corner Sombir and right corner Rinku. Both will sandwich the Bulls every time they come for their raids. This will be one way traffic as U Mumba will dominate the Bulls.
U Mumba will win.
