Welcome to the clash of former champions at the DOME at Mumbai. The rivalry between U Mumba and Dabang Delhi is quite old. Both teams have met 20 times in the PKL. While Mumba has won 12 matches out of 20, their record since season 7 against Delhi is not very good. Dabang Delhi has not lost a match to U Mumba since season 7. Both teams are in more or less similar form in season 10. While Mumba has won 6 out of its 9 matches, Dabang has won 6 out of the 10 matches that they have played.
U Mumba played back to back games earlier in the week. They defeated the Bengaluru Bulls but lost to the Jaipur Pink Panthers. Mumba will be entering the mat for another tough encounter with Dabang Delhi. Former Champions Dabang Delhi have not lost any of their last 5 matches. With Captain Naveen Kumar back in the team, Dabang will be confident about taking on U Mumba on their home turf.
Home side U Mumba is in a buoyant phase in season 10. After an inconsistent start to the season, they are peaking at the right time. They won 4 consecutive matches but faltered against the Jaipur Pink Panthers. It was their defense which crumbled in front of young Jaipur raider Arjun Deshwal. Mumba lost the match by a margin of 10 points.
Mumba had a lot of issues with its team combination. Though they have persisted with the raiding combination of Guman Singh, Zafardanesh and Jai Bhagwan, the trio has been generally inconsistent. None of these raiders are in the top 10, hence the raiding income has always been a worry for U Mumba.
But their fortunes have changed over the last 5 matches. After they lost to the Puneri Paltan early last month, they have defeated the Patna Pirates, Tamil Thalaiva, Bengal Warriors and the Telegu Titans. Mumba defeated the Bengaluru Bulls but lost to the Pink Panthers as they were fatigued playing back to back matches. This can be considered as a one of breakdown for the former champions. Raider Guman Singh scored a Super 10 against Jaipur while Jai Bhagwan and Iranian raider Alireza supported him quite well. But Mumba could only score just 3 tackle points in the match apart from conceding 2 all-outs. Their success rate in team tackles has gone down to almost 34% which is just better than the Telegu Titans who are at the bottom of the table. U Mumba does have a tendency to lose its intensity. This is the mid-season and Mumba will have to work overtime to maintain the momentum. They will be up against Dabang Delhi who have been revitalized by the return of Naveen Kumar. Even if Naveen Kumar is not available, Delhi Captain Ashu Malik will be difficult to handle. U Mumba have a very good record against Delhi. They have won 12 out of their 21 matches played so far. But Mumba has not defeated Delhi since season 7. Out of their last 7 matches, one has ended as a TIE, while Delhi has defeated U Mumba in the last 6 games. Hence this will be a tough outing for the former champions on home turf.
Champions of Season 8 have peaked at the right time. The absence of Naveen Kumar does not bother them anymore. They have not lost any of their last 5 matches which is a commendable achievement. Dabang Delhi was struggling with its combination in the first few matches. Then they encountered speed breakers in the absence of Naveen Kumar. But stand-in captain Ashu Malik has led his team positively and they have started getting the results.
Another important aspect for Delhi has been the duo of corners, Yogesh and Ankit. Both scored 9 tackle points collectively in their last match against the Patna Pirates. This has improved the team tackle efficiency to about 39%. Delhi forced a TIE against the Jaipur Pink Panthers in December 2023. Then they followed it with huge victories over UP Yodha and the Gujarat Giants. All without Naveen Kumar. This new found confidence will certainly help Dabang in this long season. Former Champions were very aggressive against the Patna Pirates. They hammered 26 points by half-time which was quite impressive. This proves that Dabang has decided to move away from their defensive thought process. They did leak 14 raid points to the Pirates, but their defenders kept their cool and took them past the finish line by just 1 point. Defenders Ashish and Yogesh have earned 5 Hi 5’s collectively in 10 matches. Defenders Mohit and Vikrant need to complement their partners. Delhi took a huge risk by fielding some young and inexperienced defenders in season 10. That move has paid off as Dabang can now boast of an impregnable wall.
Delhi will take on arch-rivals U Mumba on their home turf. They will happy to see Mumba struggling a bit. Delhi has not lost to U Mumba since August 2019. They have defeated Mumba in their last 6 matches and this will be the source of their inspiration. But Delhi will have to be careful with their second and third raiders. Meetu Sharma executed a brilliant Super raid in the last match. Young Manjeet Sharma too scored 5 raid points in the last match to complement Ashu Malik’s Super 10. Hence Dabang Delhi look much better placed than their opponents.
The mat will be on fire as former champions clash as the DOME in Mumbai. Both teams have recovered from early struggles. But U Mumba need more consistency. They need to work on their raiding tactics. Guman Singh will score a Super 10 while the other raiders will struggle to earn points. Defenders Sombir and Bittu will be lethal in the first half, but overall the Mumba defense will leak points through the match. U Mumba will miss defender Rinku. Captain Surender Singh will target Delhi captain Ashu Malik but he won’t be precise with his tackles. Iranian raider Zafardanesh may be the surprise package for U Mumba.
Dabang Delhi will depend on their tri of raiders. Ashu Malik will lead the charge with a Super 10 while Manjeet Sharma and Meetu Sharma will earn heavily in the second half. Defenders Yogesh and Ashish will target Mumba raider Guman Singh. The Delhi defense will be difficult to breach. Delhi looks much stronger than U Mumba but you never know what may happen on the mat in Mumbai.
Dabang Delhi will win.
