The scheduling of this western derby is traditional. As the season moves towards the playoff, both these teams clash to add spice to the equation. But unfortunately both teams are more or less out of the race for the eliminators. Yet the rivalry will be clearly visible on the mat.

This year the Gujarat Fortune Giants disappointed everybody. They are currently placed 11th in the points table as they could win only 7 out of the 19 matches that they have played. The Fortune Giants never took off even though they discovered young star Prateek Desai. The defense let them down as well as the lack of bench strength. Even coach Ram Mehar Singh could not induce any inspiration in this team.

On the other hand, U Mumba were slow to take off but looked invincible mid-season. Such was their terror that their opponents could not match the Mumba intensity. They moved in the top 4 of the points table at one point in the season. But soon they lost their effervescence as U Mumba have lost 4 out of their last 5 matches. Currently placed 9th in the points table, Mumba has a very rare chance to make it to the eliminators.

But both teams will give their best as sparks will fly in this western derby.

U Mumba Preview

U Mumba will be disappointed with its performance this season. But they have themselves to blame. They were in sensational form mid-season but could not maintain the intensity. The other major concern for Mumba was its weak bench. They needed a couple of big players in their ranks in order to travel the distance. Captain Surender Singh was injured after a good start and could not return to the mat. That affected U Mumba to a large extent.

Mumba was slow to take off but they changed their approach and stuck to the basics. That helped them win consistently. But maintaining the momentum has been their biggest concern. They won 2-3 games consecutively only to get flushed in the next couple of matches. They did manage to beat some big teams but could not maintain the intensity.

They are placed 9th in the points table and only a miracle can help them move into the next round. U Mumba lost a number of close games. They should have won those matches or at least forced a TIE so that they could share valuable points. What let them down was a breakdown in their defense and last-minute unforced errors. In most games, U Mumba either could not earn enough tackle points in the second half or conceded an all-out in the dying moments of the game. That was the margin between victory and defeat.

U Mumba has also executed 186 successful team tackles in 19 games.

They executed 24 Super tackles which prove their defensive prowess.

U Mumba has earned 69 Do-or-Die raid points which indicates that they were heavily reliant on empty raids. Instead of playing their natural game or adapting to their opponents, Mumba stuck to the standard plan which backfired.

Mumba has also conceded 23 all-outs in 19 matches.

With a bleak future, U Mumba takes on their traditional rivals, the Gujarat Fortune Giants who seem to have gone berserk in their last 2 matches. It will be an exciting contest as Mumba will try and attack the brittle Fortune Giants' defense. They will hope that they win this match and stay alive expecting to qualify for the next round at the expense of another team.

Gujarat Giants Preview

The Gujarat Fortune Giants have been a pale shadow of themselves this season. After a sensational debut at the PKL a few years back, the Fortune Giants have not been able to live up to expectations. They were known for their tenacity and innovative approach, but this season has been a forgetful one for them.

They never looked comfortable with their team composition ever as their only companion was struggling. They are currently placed 11th after playing 19 matches. With just 7 victories, they are out of contention for the next round. But this has propelled them to play naturally as they won their last 2 matches by a big margin. Both were high-scoring games where raider Prateek Dahiya looted the opponents.

The Fortune Giants hammered table toppers Puneri Paltan earlier in the week followed by a convincing win over Patna Pirates. Prateek Dahiya was the hero against the Paltan while Mahendra Rajput was instrumental in helping his team beat the Patna Pirates. With just 2 matches remaining for the Fortune Giants, they will look to play for pride and entertain their fans.

The Fortune Giants have earned 700 team points in 19 matches but they have conceded 732.

They have conducted 17 Super raids but the Giants could execute only 144 successful tackles in 19 matches.

They have inflicted 28 all-outs this season while conceding 26.

The Fortune Giants have no chance to move into the next round. Hence they will concentrate on enjoying the mat as they take on their arch-rivals U Mumba in the next match. The Giants get an adrenalin rush whenever they play U Mumba. In fact, Mahendra Singh Rajput’s Super raid against U Mumba in season 7 is still a legend. He will hope to repeat it again as the Fortune Giants will wish to leave the season with some brownie points.

Entertainment will be the only virtue as U Mumba takes on the Gujarat Fortune Giants in the last western derby of the season. Both teams are out of the race for the playoff. U Mumba looks rusty and fatigued as they have lost consecutive matches while the Fortune Giants have won consecutive matches with renewed vigor.

U Mumba will hope that their defense doesn’t crumble in this match. Captain Surender is back as he will trap the Gujarat raiders along with Rinku and left corner Mohit. Raiders Ghuman, Ashish, and Jai Bhawan will earn but none of them will score a Super 10.

Gujarat Fortune Giants will unleash raiders Prateek Dahiya and Mahendra Singh Rajput. They will take a big lead by half-time and may also inflict an all-out on U Mumba. Defenders Sourav Gulia and Arkam Shaikh will be lethal and left corner Narwal will be particularly aggressive in the second half. Gujarat will score heavily and win this Western derby.
