Time is running out for the Patna Pirates as they have hit a roadblock at the business end of the season. They will be playing their second match in 2 days. They lost to the Haryana Steelers yesterday which has further dented their hopes of making it to the playoff.
The UP Yodha had a tough outing against the Gujarat Fortune Giants but they managed to win the beat them by a margin of 4 points. The Yodha seems to be peaking at the right time and they have enough backups.
The Pirates looked fatigued as the long season has taken a toll on a lot of their players. It clearly shows on the defense who could not keep up the intensity against the Haryana Steelers. The Pirates had beaten UP Yodha earlier in the season and they would like to repeat that performance. But a loss in this game will seal their fate for season 9.
The Yodha has worked hard throughout the season to maintain a decent position in the points table. They have a brilliant trio of raiders and an efficient group of defenders. The Yodha was lucky to witness the revival of Dubki King Pardeep Narwal who announced his grand comeback this season after an average show in season 8.
He has scored 156 raid points in 16 matches which includes 6 Super 10’s while the Man of Steel, Surender Gill has 132 raid points to his name. Rohit Tomar has been a revelation as he has earned 47 points in 12 matches most of them coming in the last 5 games.
The Yodha has a success rate of almost 41% in team raids and 38% in team tackles. They have executed 16 Super raids. This has been possible as all 3 raiders have executed multi-point raids regularly. They have also inflicted 26 all-outs which has helped the Yodha decimate its opponents.
The UP Yodha have won 4 out of their last 5 games which proves that they are in good touch. They lost to the Jaipur Pink Panthers earlier in the week which was due to a breakdown in their defense. Though Pardeep scored a Super 10, raiders Surender and Rohit could not match his earnings. This is one of the only ways to strangle the Yodha.
The Yodha lost to the Patna Pirates earlier in the season. That was a close match that UP Yodha lost primarily due to the unforced errors they committed in the second half. A lack of raid points and a double all-out conceded sealed their fate against the Pirates. But a long season has bolstered the Yodha and they seem to be immune to silly mistakes.
They will look forward to avenging their defeat against the struggling Pirates. If the Yodha is able to win, they will get a good push in the points table necessary for them at this point of time in the tournament.
Former champions had a chequered journey this season. They have displayed all possible behavioral patterns in their performances. They lost their first 5 games which was a shocker to their fans. Then they looked like a completely different side with the same set of players. Their stocks have seen a lot of instability as they find themselves in a difficult situation. Stationed at the 8th spot in the points table, the doors for the playoff are fast closing on the Pirates.
Raider Sachin Tanwar is their main hope as he has earned 58 Do-or-Die raid points which is the highest by any raider this season. All-rounder Rohit Gulia has scored 114 raid points this season for the Pirates. Rohit scored a Super 10 in his last match against the Haryana Steelers in a lost cause.
Defenders Mohammedreza and Sunil are on the list of the top 10 defenders of the season and the Pirates have executed 147 successful team tackles. But the Pirates are following a strategy to slow down the game and gamble on the DoD raids. They do not have a lot of options for raiding and are heavily dependent on Sachin Tanwar.
This has backfired on them. In their last match, Sachin was caught off-guard by the Haryana defense which heavily affected the Pirates raiding income. Patna Pirates have suffered as they could not develop their reserve raiders. The form of Captain Neeraj Kumar has also been an issue. The Patna defense managed just 5 tackle points in the entire match. Left corner Mohammedreza had looted 16 tackle points in his last match, the highest by any defender.
But the Pirates have not been able to maintain this intensity for long.
They have conducted 728 team raids which is the highest by any team.
But the Pirates have also conceded 23 all-outs in 17 matches.
They take on arch-rivals UP Yodha in their next match which will test their character. They will have to battle self-doubt, fatigue, and a strong opponent.
This match will more or less define the future of both teams in this tournament. If the Pirates want to keep their hopes alive they will have to win this match. But they are losing steam very quickly and it will be an uphill task for them to upset the UP Yodha.
The Yodha will expect Pardeep Narwal to weave his magic on his former team. Pardeep completed 1500 raid points in this history of PKL earlier in the season. He will hope to add a Super 10 to the tally. Raiders Surender and Rohit Tomar will support him nicely. All-rounder Gurdeep is in good form along with left-corner Sumit. Both will target Patna raider Sachin.
Rohit Gulia will once again play an important role for the Pirates. But they will miss the third raider. Left corner Mohammedreza will target Pardeep in the first half. The Pirates may be slow to start but they will trouble the UP Yodha in the second half to make the match more exciting.
UP Yodha will win.
