The Bellerive Oval, also known as Blundstone Arena is a cricket ground located in a suburb on the eastern shore of Hobart named Bellerive. The stadium is predominately used as a hosting venue for cricket and Australian rules football matches. It is also the home ground for domestic state teams such as Tasmanian Tigers and Hobart Hurricanes. Equipped with a seating capacity of nearly 20000, the stadium is arguably the second largest operating stadium in Tasmania behind Utas stadium which holds 21000. The stadium received its first floodlight system in the year 2009.
The venue primarily features three main stands most notably the Southern Stand (the largest of the lot) and the Members and Players Pavilions. In addition, the stadium comprises two smaller stands incorporating a traditional hill on the eastern boundary. In 1957, the artificial surface was replaced with an actual turf wicket and the stadium also underwent a host of other enhancements like removal of a noticeable camber and leveling of the oval.
The first international match played at this venue was an ODI fixture played between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in 1988. Subsequently, a year later, the venue staged its first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka. Apart from hosting international fixtures, Bellerive Oval is widely known for actively hosting domestic competitions sponsored by Cricket Australia (CA) such as Sheffield Shield and Women’s Big Bash League.

Bellerive Oval, Hobart Pitch Report
The Bellerive Oval is highly renowned for the assistance it offers to the pacers early on. It is not a typical flat pitch as it may look from the outside and is pace-friendly in nature. Besides, the venue has a reputation for being windy which can further work out in the favor of the quick bowlers. But once the batters manage to spend some time in the middle, batting becomes progressively easier as the game goes on.
With regards to Men’s T20 cricket, the average first innings score hovers around 165. Moreover, the venue has seen a few 200-plus scores in international and domestic T20 fixtures as teams have managed to surpass the 190-run mark on 9 occasions. But a pattern, which evidently stands out across all white-ball formats in men’s cricket is the inability of the teams to chase in the second half. Teams batting second have fallen short on numerous occasions thus only managing 48 wins in 109 matches across all formats.
But on the flip side, the story is a lot different for Women’s cricket. Batting second has done wonders for the teams. All five women’s ODI games have been won chasing while in 44 recorded T20 games, teams tasted success on 24 occasions while batting second. Therefore, it is believed that toss may not play such a crucial role and the captain should opt to bat or bowl first by carefully examining the prevailing conditions on match day.
