The WACA Ground a.k.a. The Western Australia Cricket Ground is a sports stadium located in Perth, Western Australia. Opened in the year 1893, the stadium has hosted some memorable rivalries and showdowns in world cricket. Over its century-long history, the venue has played host to a plethora of sports apart from cricket such as Australian rules football, baseball, soccer, rugby league, rugby union, and international rules football.

The ground can house nearly 25000 visitors and serves as the home venue of Western Australia's first-class cricket team, the Western Warriors, and the state's Women's National Cricket League side, the Western Fury. Additionally, Perth Scorchers also play their home matches of the Big Bash League at this very venue.

The stadium was originally built on old swamp land. Back in the day, the stadium had very modest features and incorporated limited infrastructure around it. In 1986, the stadium got it’s first floodlight system in place. In 2002, the venue underwent redevelopment, resulting in a reduction of its capacity to enhance economic viability. This project included the construction of a new smaller grandstand and a players' pavilion, as well as a decrease in the dimensions of the playing field. Additionally, the seating was transformed, with grass hills introduced on either side and all existing seats replaced with new ones.

In 1971, the WACA staged its first Test between Australia and England and since then, earned the reputation for being a fast and hard track. And later in 1980, the venue got the chance to host its maiden ODI match between India and New Zealand, a match that was won by India by 5 runs. Glenn McGrath’s memorable hat-trick against West Indies in 2000 came at this ground where he managed to get rid of Sherwin Campbell, Brian Lara, and Jimmy Adams in quick succession. Following the inauguration of the Optus Stadium, the WACA stadium is just being used for domestic games off late.

WACA, Perth, Pitch Report

The pitch at WACA is considered to have one of the fastest and bounciest pitches in Australia. It is reportedly a lot quicker compared to the one in MCG. In addition, the afternoon sea breezes further come to the advantage of the seamers and quicker bowlers and make them a dangerous prospect against the batters. But due to the skiddy nature of the deck followed by a quick outfield, the ball tends to fly off the bat which presents the batters with ample scoring opportunities. It is imperative for the batters to spend sufficient time and get a hang of the surface before putting their foot down.

As current figures suggest, the average first innings score in men’s T20 falls within the healthy range of 155-160. Moreover, the venue has also seen seven 190-plus scores which also includes the highest score of 203/7 achieved by the Perth Scorchers demonstrating how lucrative the venue can be in terms of run scoring.

Although the bigger boundary dimensions make the big shots hard to come by, the batters can utilize the pace of the ball and have a lot of success while hitting the ball across the surface. Moreover, the fast-paced nature of the deck can also make chasing a very viable option for the team batting last. In all T20s across all genders, teams batting second have emerged victorious in nearly 55% of the games.

The SCG has a playing surface area that is 149m long and 139m wide. The straight boundary is estimed to be around 70m, whereas the square boundaries are estimated to fall within the range of 80-85m.
