Alyssa Healy to Miss Women's Premier League 2025 Due to Injury Concerns

Alyssa Healy to Miss Women's Premier League 2025 Due to Injury Concerns

UP Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy has announced that she will be sitting out the upcoming Women's Premier League (WPL) season due to ongoing injury concerns. Healy, who led the franchise in the first two seasons of the tournament, made her decision public after Australia's dominant victory in the one-off Test against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The Australian women's team registered a historic 16-0 whitewash in the Women's Ashes, cementing their supremacy in the multi-format series. However, Healy's health remains a primary concern, and she is also doubtful for Australia’s T20I tour of New Zealand in late March.

Recovery Period for Healy

Speaking after Australia’s series triumph, Healy expressed disappointment about missing the WPL but acknowledged the need for recovery.

“Unfortunately for me, I've got a couple of months feet up,” Healy stated. “I’m pretty bummed by that, but at the same time elated to have a little bit of downtime and try to get my body right. But I’m looking forward to sticking my feet in an ice bucket.”

Healy has been dealing with a stress reaction in her right foot, following a plantar fascia rupture she sustained during the T20 World Cup in October. Although she returned to play in the Ashes Test as a specialist batter, she handed over the wicketkeeping duties to Beth Mooney.

Prior to this, Healy had missed the T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa, the latter part of the Women's Big Bash League, and Australia’s series against India. Additionally, she has been struggling with knee issues, which have further complicated her recovery.

A String of Setbacks

Reflecting on her injury struggles, Healy described the past 18 months as frustrating.

“You get yourself right, back playing, and something else goes wrong,” she admitted. “I’m going to have a look at a couple of things and how I can be better—maybe a bit more disciplined in some areas—and make sure I’m right to go, in particular for that ODI World Cup.”

The Australian wicketkeeper-batter emphasized the importance of managing workloads, especially ahead of the ICC Women's ODI World Cup later this year.

“It’s going to be a huge load coming off not a lot of cricket for a lot of the girls in the winter, so just managing things to get right for that,” Healy added.

UP Warriorz Yet to Announce Replacement

Healy becomes the second major international player to withdraw from the WPL 2025, following New Zealand all-rounder Sophie Devine, who has taken an indefinite break from domestic cricket. With the third edition of the WPL set to begin on February 14, UP Warriorz are yet to announce her replacement and the new captain for the season.

For Indian cricket enthusiasts, this development will certainly impact the dynamics of the tournament.
