BBL 2024-25 - What is Wrong with Melbourne Renegades?

A new season of the Big Bash League has begun and Melbourne Renegades are again in the news because of all the wrong reasons. It is their 2nd consecutive season that the Renegades have failed to display a dominating performance. The cricket betting apps are also showing the odds against the team for the ongoing season of BBL.

The 14th season of BBL was expected to be good news for Melbourne Renegades. However, things are not going as per the plan. Melbourne Renegades are currently in the 7th position in the point table with 3 losses and 5 wins. Their net run rate currently stands at +0.060.

In the previous edition of the league, Melbourne Renegades finished their competition at the 7th spot with just 2 wins and 6 losses. Their net run rate stood at -0.289. Even after making some minor changes in the squad, things have not changed for the franchise.

Melbourne Renegades started their BBL campaign this year with a loss against Sydney Sixers in the first match. They immediately collected themselves and scored 2 consecutive wins in the league against Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers respectively.

These two losses impact the team’s morale and now the franchise is going through a nightmare. They are walking on a thin line to make it to the playoffs but even if they do, winning the title looks like climbing Mount Everest.

Melbourne Renegades - Weakness

The primary weakness of the Melbourne Renegades lies in their batting unit and it is clearly visible. Their key players have failed to do the job well. It doesn't matter that the Renegades are batting first or second, the batters have not played with the right intensity.

Jake Fraser-McGurk and Josh Brown have been the top-order partnerships for the team and they have not come out as the reliable players to score runs. They both need to step up their game in order to save the team in the league.

The above table clearly tells us the story of the Renegades’s batting unit. Their top-scorer has an average of 25 and that is not a positive sign. Things don’t look good for the future of Melbourne Renegades in BBL 2024-25.

Melbourne Renegades - Threat

One thing that is working in favour of Melbourne Renegades this year is their bowling unit. They have a good lineup of bowlers who are consistently scalping wickets for the franchise.

However, the problem is that in recent games, the whole team has been dependent on only 2 names to scalp wickets. Tim Rogers and Adam Zampa have been the 2 leading wicket-takers for the team. Out of these two, Tim Rogers has come out as the leading wicket-taker in the league.

BBL 2024-25 - Can Melbourne Renegades Make it to the Playoffs?

Melbourne Renegades scored a win against Hobart Hurricanes in the recent fixture. However, that changes nothing for the Renegades because it is too late for them to do anything to reach the playoffs. Melbourne Renegades are now left with a single league fixture against Brisbane Heat and even if they win it, there are very bleak chances for the Renegades to the playoffs.
