BBL 2024 - Cricket Australia Revokes David Warner's Leadership Ban

BBL 2024 - Cricket Australia Revokes David Warner's Leadership Ban

Cricket Australia (CA) has overturned the lifetime leadership ban from David Warner. The Australian board banned Warner in 2018 following the sandpaper incident in Cape Town. The former Australian opener is now eligible to lead Sydney Thunder in the upcoming BBL season.

Cricket Australia confirmed the news after getting updates from the independent Conduct Commission review on Friday. A three-person panel made a final call on Warner and lifted the ban from the player due to the changes to the code of conduct in 2022.

Cricket Australia’s official statement reads, "In its decision the panel noted 'the respectful and contrite tone of Warner's responses, as well as the content impressed the Review Panel and led it to the unanimous view that he was sincere and genuine in acknowledging responsibility for the conduct and in his statement that he had extreme remorse for his conduct.”

"The panel also considered references citing 'the contribution that Mr Warner has made, and can make in the future, towards the development of young cricketers in Australia if they were given the opportunity to be led by Mr Warner, his important continuing role in fostering interest in cricket especially with the South Asian community in Australia and generally'."

David Warner Likely to Lead Sydney Thunder in BBL

CA chief executive Nick Hockley was happy with the decision and said, "In 2022 we updated the Code of Conduct to ensure there was a fair and rigorous process in place for all players and player support personnel to have long-term sanctions reviewed. I am pleased David has chosen to have his sanction reviewed and that he will be eligible to take up leadership positions in Australian Cricket this summer and in the BBL 2024 season.

Despite the ban in the last six and half years, Warner led IPL sides like Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals. David Warner will now lead the BBL franchise Sydney Thunder for the 2024-25 season. This is the first time he will play the entire season. Warner has already retired from Test and T20I format. With the Champions Trophy months away, the selectors are unlikely to pick the southpaw for the upcoming ODIs as well.
