Ben Stokes Opts out of T20 World Cup 2024
England's Test Captain Ben Stokes has requested England Cricket Board (ECB) not consider him in the 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC World T20 World Cup scheduled in the first week of June.
The 32-year-old all-rounder underwent knee surgery after the 2023 ODI World Cup and later played the five-match test series in India. Interestingly Stokes hasn't bowled many overs in the test series. Stokes himself revealed that he has not attained 100% fitness to bowl yet and he is now focused on attaining the bowling fitness not just for the upcoming summer where England will play a three-match series against West Indies and Sri Lanka and for the rest of the year.
After announcing his decision Ben Stokes said:
“I’m working hard and focusing on building my bowling fitness back up to fulfil a full role as an all-rounder in all formats of cricket. Opting out of the IPL and the World Cup will hopefully be a sacrifice that allows me to be the all-rounder I want to be for the foreseeable future.
“The recent Test tour of India highlighted how far behind I was from a bowling point of view after my knee surgery and nine months without bowling. I’m looking forward to playing for Durham in the County Championship before the start of our Test summer. I wish Jos (Buttler), Motty (Matthew Mott) and all the team the best of luck in defending our title.”
Will Ben Stokes Unavailability affect England's Title Chances?
Ben Stokes played a crucial role in England's glory in the 2022 T20 World Cup. The all-rounder made useful contributions scoring 110 runs and picking up 6 wickets. In the final against Pakistan at the MCG it was Stoke's composed knock of 52* runs in 49 balls that helped England win their second T20 World Cup in 12 years.
England will miss the services of their champion all-rounder in the upcoming edition of the T20 World Cup and the odds on cricket betting apps of England winning the world cup might vary without him. England will kick off their campaign against their neighbouring country Scotland on 4th June at Barbados. They are placed in Group B and will face a steep competition against Australia, Oman and Namibia.
