Cameron Green Set to Miss BGT Test Series Due to Looming Back Surgery

Cameron Green Set to Miss BGT Test Series Due to Looming Back Surgery

With the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy fast approaching, question marks regarding Cameron Green’s availability begin to gather momentum. The Aussie batting all-rounder is coping with a severe back injury. As his struggles continue to rage on, a wide range of rehabilitation options are put forward to steam his quick recovery. But amongst all the remedial options, surgery seems to be the one that tops the list.

Green reportedly picked up the injury during Australia’s tour of England last month and was forced out of the remainder of the ODI series after featuring in 3 games. He left the tour midway following the conclusion of the third ODI and flew back home to run extensive scans and tests on his back.

Cricket Australia's medical and high performance team are yet to work out a plan to move forward with his injury issue. A whole set of options have been put on the table and the administration is yet to finalize on the next course of action. If Cricket Australia (CA) proposes to take the surgery route, Green could see himself getting ruled out of the entire summer season which involves the high-octane BGT 2024-25 Test series.

But if a non-surgical option is planned, Green can moderately recover from his back issue but will only play a role as a batter. Furthermore, the time needed for him to recover from the injury through non-surgical means would be a topic open for debate.

How Will Australia strategize in Green’s absence?

Green’s exclusion will leave the doors wide open for Australia’s number four slot. This will allow the team to reshuffle the batting order, a move which could drag Steve Smith to the no.4 position. Once Smith settles in that position, the Australian top order will be open for contention as the likes of Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and Matt Renshaw will be vying to make an entry and cement their spot at the top.

Another player who could potentially return to the test squad is Glenn Maxwell who last played a test match in 2017 but it will be up to the selectors who are unwilling to entrust Maxwell in the red ball format. Tasmania all-rounder Beu Webster who has been in the reckoning for quite some time now and recently scored a century in the sheffield shield could be in the running for a spot in the final 15 for the Border Gavaskar Trophy starting on 22nd Novemeber. With Green’s injury the online cricket betting odds are likley to take a swing and mostly it is going to be even with the visitors India also being the likely favourites to defeat Australia.
