Chamari Athapaththu to Lead Sri Lanka in Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

Chamari Athapaththu to Lead Sri Lanka in Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

Sri Lanka has named their 15-member squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, with Chamari Athapaththu continuing as captain. Athapaththu, known for her inspirational leadership, will lead a team that closely mirrors the squad that secured Sri Lanka's first-ever Women’s Asia Cup title earlier this year. Notably, veteran left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera returns to the squad after last featuring in the Women's T20 World Cup Qualifier 2024.

Ranaweera, with over 12 years of experience, is expected to play a key role on the spin-friendly wickets in the UAE, bringing valuable expertise to the team’s bowling attack.

A Successful 18-Month Run

Sri Lanka has enjoyed a remarkable 18 months, achieving historic milestones including their first-ever series wins against England and South Africa in any format. The team also triumphed in the Women's Asia Cup and went unbeaten in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Qualifier 2024.

Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup 2024 Squad: Chamari Athapaththu (c), Anushka Sanjeewani, Harshitha Madhavi, Nilakshika de Silva, Inoka Ranaweera, Hasini Perera, Kavisha Dilhari, Sachini Nisansala, Vishmi Gunaratne, Udeshika Prabodhani, Achini Kulasuriya, Sugandika Kumari, Inoshi Priyadharshani, Shashini Gimhani, Ama Kanchana. Travelling reserve: Kaushini Nuthyangana.

Key Players to Watch

While Athapaththu, Sri Lanka's highest run-scorer in T20s, remains the team’s cornerstone, several other players have stepped up with match-winning performances in recent months.

Kavisha Dilhari, who took nine wickets at an average of 12.33 in the Asia Cup, was the second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament and will be key in the UAE conditions. Batters Vishmi Gunaratne and Harshitha Madhavi are also crucial in the top order, both having impressed with centuries during Sri Lanka's recent tour of Ireland.

Sri Lanka finds itself in a tough Group A alongside defending champions Australia, India, New Zealand, and Pakistan. Their campaign kicks off on 3 October with a crucial match against Pakistan.

With a strong blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, Sri Lanka is poised to make a significant impact at the T20 World Cup. Building upon their recent successes, the Lankans are determined to go deep into the tournament. Cricket betting enthusiasts should keep a close eye on their performance, as they have the potential to deliver exciting matches.
