The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 cricket tournament is held in the Caribbean every year. In 2013, the first edition of CPL was unveiled, and it replaced the Caribbean Twenty20 as the premier T20 competition in the Caribbean. CPL T20 tournament is played among six teams and it is divided into two parts, a group stage, and playoffs. In the group stage, the six teams play in a round-robin format and then the top four teams clash in the playoffs. The top two teams play in the Qualifier 1, whose winner will get direct entry to the final. The teams ranked 3 and 4 would play in the eliminator, whose winner will play the second qualifier against a team that lost the Qualifier 1. And eventually, the winners of two qualifiers will clash in the final match for the championship.
The six participant teams in the CPL 2019 are as follows:
These six franchises have 17 contracted players each, including a maximum of five international players and four players under the age of 23. The squads of all the teams include at least six players from the franchise country.
Trinbago Knight Riders’s are the defending champions and they hold the most CPL trophies. The Knight Riders won their first trophy in 2015, under the name of Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel, and then they became champions again in 2017 and 2018 as Trinbago Knight Riders. Jamaica Tallawahs had become the champions of the first season, defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL 2013 final. These two teams met again in CPL 2016 final, and Jamaica defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors once again, to clinch their second CPL trophy. Apart from Trinbago and Jamaica, Barbados Tridents is the only team to hold the CPL trophy, which they won in 2014. Guyana Amazon Warriors are consistent throughout the seasons, as they have the most number of CPL final appearances (4), though unfortunately, they couldn't convert any of their chances.
Across the CPL seasons, Chris Gayle tops the chart of most runs in CPL with his 2111 runs in 64 innings, playing for Jamaica Tallawahs, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Andre Russell’s hold the record for the highest individual score of 121 not out in just 49 balls. Dwayne Smith’s four centuries is the most in CPL tournaments while Gayle’s 13 fifties are the most by any batsman in CPL. DJ Bravo leads the most-wickets table with 97 wickets in 69 matches, which he took at an average of 21.52. Sunil Narine’s economy rate of 5.49 in 64 matches is the best in CPL history. He has bowled 251.1 overs and given away 1379 runs.
From 36 million viewers in 2013, the CPL viewership has grown to 134 million viewers in 2016 and it breached the 200 Million mark for the first time in 2018. CPL got a sixth successive year of increased viewership. CPL continues to showcase the best Caribbean cricket, and the 2019 season will carry on this upwards trajectory without a qualm.

Expert prediction: Considering the strong line-up, betting on BT is a very good choice! Our expert’s prediction is BT to reach the final 4 this season!
In the inaugural season, the Tridents played well and managed the third place, while their best season was CPL 2014 as they lifted the trophy beating Guyana Amazon Warriors by 8 runs (D/L method). In 2015 they ended as runners-up after losing to Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel by 20 runs. In the last three years, they have not been as good and mostly remained at the bottom of the points table. With players like Shai Hope, Holder, Hales, Asif Ali, Wahab Riaz, the coach Robin Singh is hopeful to draw their graph upward this time.
England's banned opening batsman Alex Hales is roped in by the Barbados Tridents during CPL auctions held in May 2019. The limited-overs specialist was earlier suspended for 21 days due to the use of recreational drugs, just prior to the World Cup. However, he has made a steady comeback for Nottinghamshire club. It’s a great opportunity for him to do well and stand out in the T20 league. The franchise also got Nepal’s young and talented leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane in the fifth round of the CPL 2019 draft for at $70,000, a huge pay raise from his last year's $5000 from SKN Patriots. The other recruits are Pakistan's power-hitter Asif Ali, Wahab Riaz, and all-rounder Imad Wasim. Amongst the locals, Shai Hope, Johnson Charles, Jonathan Carter, and Ashley Nurse have joined the franchise too.
Barbados Tridents have a good winning ratio with teams like St Lucia Stars (66.66% wins) and Jamaica Tallawah (45.45% wins), however against the teams like Trinbago Knight Riders (33.33% wins), St Kitts & Nevis Patriots (25% wins) and Guyana Amazon Warriors (36.36% wins) they would face tough competitions.
In the last season, Barbados won just two matches in their 10 outings and stayed at the 6th position in the points table, as it turned out to be their worst CPL show. They were at 5th places in 2016 and 2017 seasons. Though, they had remarkable first three CPL seasons – especially 2014 – in which they had become the champions after defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final match. Thetopbookies cricket betting expert prediction is Barbados Tridents to be in the top-four for CPL 2019.
Expert prediction: GAW will look to change their fortunes and win their maiden trophy, betting on their team would be a good opportunity to gain some nice profits. Our expert’s prediction is GAW to reach the final this year!
Guyana Amazon Warriors have recorded the maximum CPL final appearances. In the six CPL seasons, they have played 4 final matches. In the first season, they had topped the group-stage points table and defeated Trinbago Knight Rider in the semi-final. However, they were blocked by Jamaica Tallawahs in the final. The next season, 2014, they had defeated then-defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs to make it to the final. Unfortunately, rain forced the result to be declared by D/L method and they lost the championship by just 8 runs as per D/L method. In 2015, they failed to reach the final for the first time as they lost to Trinbago Knight Riders in the semi-final. In 2016 they again topped the points table and reached the final, but only to get a disastrous loss against Jamaica Tallawahs, after their batsmen collapsed in 93 runs batting first. In 2017, they got the third place while in the previous season, they made their fourth final appearance and made 147 runs in 20 overs batting first. Trinbago Knight Riders, however, chased down the total in 17.3 overs and their dream of holding the trophy is still eluding.
The franchise has signed Nicholas Pooran as the Marquee Player for this CPL season. The wicketkeeper-batsman has recently overwhelmed everyone with his batting performances. Pooran has played 11 T20Is and one ODI for West Indies. In T20s, he has scored 218 runs with an average of 24.22 and strike-rate of 140.64. In his maiden Indian Premier League appearance this season, the left-handed batsman scored 168 runs in six innings for Kings XI Punjab, with an average of 28.00 and strike-rate of 157.00 which includes two 40s. Keemo Paul is also one of the key players for GAW. He had impressed everyone when he took a career-best 5 for 15 against Bangladesh in T20 in December 2018.
The team is being coached by South African-Australian Johan Botha, who played for the South African national team between 2005 and 2012.
Guyana Amazon Warriors have lost just two games against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots out of their 8 encounters. Against Jamaica Tallawahs, they have won 9 out of 16 matches, while against St Lucia Zouks and Barbados Tridents they have won 7 games in 11 encounters. Trinbago Knight Riders are the only team against which Guyana seems to face some difficulties, as they have just 38.23 winning ratio against Trinbago Knight Riders. It is expected that Guyana Amazon Warriors will reach at least till the playoffs stage and their chances of playing in the final or even clinching their maiden trophy are very high.
Expert Prediction: Betting on JT will be very exciting, now that they have the destructive Chris Gayle in their batting line up. Our prediction is JT to be one fo the main contenders for the title
Jamaica Tallawahs have been the second most successful team in the CPL so far. They made it to the playoffs in all the previous 6 seasons. Tallawahs won the inaugural season of CPL 2013. However, in 2014 and 2015, they were at 3rd and 4th place in point table respectively. They came back strongly in 2016 and won their second title of CPL. Recently in the last 2 seasons- 2017 and 2018, they failed to make a similar impact as they end up at the fourth place. In the previous season, they won 6 out of their 10 games. In the first eliminator, they lost the low scoring game to Guyana Amazon Warriors by 2 wickets.
In the 2019 CPL auction, they brought in Chris Gayle to his home side. Chris Gayle is one of the most destructive batsmen in cricket. Additionally, he is also the leading scorer in CPL and T-20 cricket leagues. He has also hit the most number of sixes in T-20 leagues. Skipper Andre Russell is one of the most feared all-rounders in T20. He has been a consistent performer in the T20 leagues across the world. He is the second all-rounder in the T20 history to take a hat-trick and score a century in the same match. He achieved that feat against the Knight Riders in last season. Wicketkeeper-batsman Glenn Phillips was the biggest match-winner for the side in last season; he was in blistering form and consistently scored runs for the team which also includes hundred in the Eliminator. Notably, with 457 runs in 11 matches, he was the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament in last season. Tallawahs would be relying heavily on this trio in CPL 2019. Besides, Jamaica Tallawahs also got a great bunch of local players - Rovman Powell, Chadwick Walton, Javelle Glen.
In the bowling unit, they got talented young pacer Oshane Thomas in the side; with 18 wickets from 10 games, he was the second-highest wicket-taker in the previous season.
Jamaica Tallawahs outings against the teams like St Lucia Stars (72.72 % wins) and Trinbago Knight Riders (64.28% wins) and Barbados Tridents(54.54% wins), they have a better winning ratio. However, against the Guyana Amazon Warriors (43.75% wins) they would face tough competitions. Their key player Andre Russell has been hampered by injuries recently. If he is able to get back to his full fitness and play the entire season, Jamaica Tallawahs are going to be serious contenders for the title.
Expert prediction: Our expert’s prediction is SNP, with new impressive player’s addition to the side this year, to reach Final four!
St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots played their first CPL in 2015. They had very disappointing first 2 seasons - 2015 and 2016 as they end up at the last place in the point table. However, in 2017, Patriots bounced back remarkably and make it to finals. In finals, they lost to Trinbago Knight Riders. In the last season - 2018, they also had great success. They won 5 out of their 10 games and qualified for play-offs. But they lost in the second eliminator versus Trinbago Knight Riders by 20 runs and end the season at third place in the point table.
In the CPL 2019 auctions, Patriots has not retained the marquee player Chris Gayle. It will make things tough for them. Pakistani all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez has been brought in to the side to provide stability in top-order batting and variety in a spin. However, in recent times, he has not been in great touch in international cricket. In batting a lot would depend on the opener Even Lewis to provide solid platform up-front. A spin bowling all-rounder Fabian Allen can play a great role for the Patriots in this season. He got a very late opportunity in the tournament in last season but was impressive in his limited outings. In three innings, he scored 119 runs with a strike rate of 188. He played a wonderful knock of 64 not out against Tridents to win a crucial match for his side. He was also able to pick up two wickets with his slow left-arm orthodox. Patriots got another excellent all-rounder Carlos Braithwaite, who is also leading the team this time.
In the bowling department, Sheldon Cottrell and Rayad Emrit will be the leading pacer in the side.
St. Kitts and Patriots got great win ratio versus the Barbados Tridents (75.00% wins) and St Lucia Zouks (66.66% wins). On the contrary, Patriots has struggled against Knight Rider (27.27% wins), Guyana Amazon Warriors (25% wins), Jamaica Tallawahs (44.44% wins). Patriots are likely to face tough battle playing against these teams.
With their success in an earlier season and it is expected that St. Kitts and Patriots will make it to top four this time.
Expert prediction: Betting on STZ is for betting enthusiasts. The Zouks chances this year and considering their history in recent years are very slim. But could be they can win a game as underdogs and you could score good winnings! Other than few sporadic wins, we expect The Zouks to be one of the last teams in the table this season as well.
St. Lucia Zouks formerly known as St Lucia Stars is a rather most underperforming team in the CPL so far as they failed to make it top three in any of the last six seasons. In the previous season 2018, St Lucia Zouks won only three out of their 10 games and they end-up at 5th place in the points table. Earlier, in the first two seasons-2013 and 2014, the Zouks won only 4 games out of 14, finishing last and second last in the tournament respectively. The 2016 season showed their best record yet, winning 6 out of 10 games and finishing fourth in the league, the Zouks' highest CPL T20 finish to date.
Unlike other teams in CPL, St Lucia Zouks is not profoundly a star-studded team in the CPL. Though they bring the most experienced T-20 bowler Lasith Malinga in the side and his experience can prove very vital to team success this season. The side also includes other Sri Lankan player – Thisara Perara and Niroshan Dickwella. Andre Fletchers, Darren Sammy, Kersick Williams, Rakheem Cornwall, and John Campbell are all a part of the squad which means that there is a decent set of local West Indian players to choose from as well.
On the bowling front, new inclusion of Beuran Hendricks and Fawad Ahmed help to lead the bowling attack.
St Lucia Zouks side doesn’t possess good record against any of the opponent team in CPL. Their win ratio against the opponent Barbados Tridents (33.33% wins), Guyana Amazon Warriors (36.26% wins), Jamaica Tallawahs (27.17% wins), St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (33.33% wins) and Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel (18% wins).
St Lucia Zouks side led by newly appointed skipper Darren Sammy are expected to be in bottom place this year considering the squad for this year and their win record versus the opponent team.
Expert Prediction: Betting on TKR could prove to be the most profitable. If the team wins the CPL 2019 title, they will be the only team to win 3 T20 titles, 3 years in a role in T20 Cricket History. Our expert prediction is TKR to reach semi-finals.
The defending champion Trinbago Knight Riders is the most successful team in the CPL. Out of the previous six seasons of CPL, Knight Riders won it three times (2018, 2017, and 2015). Furthermore, the side has an overall winning record of 62.50, best in the CPL. Riders Side led by Dwayne Bravo, arguably one of the best all-rounder’s in T-20 cricket got massive success in T-20 leagues all over the world. With 97 wickets, he is also the leading wicket-taker in CPL.
In this year CPL auction, the defending champions have made two great inclusions into the side. New Zealand all-rounder, James Neesham and Pakistani pacer Mohammad Hasnain. Both the player got huge success in international cricket and will be keen to make an impact in the CPL 2019. Kieron Pollard, one of the most devastating batsmen in T20 has been the big addition to a team. Like last year, his promotion in batting can prove vital for knight Riders. Sunil Narine, Colin Munro, Denesh Ramdin, Darren Bravo and USA pacer Ali Khan were retained. Trinbago Knight Riders team looks very balanced and strong as they got the destructive opener batsman, best all-rounder’s in T20 cricket and quality bowlers.
In the last season, Colin Munro has been the star batsman for the side. He was the highest run-scorer of the tournament with 500+ runs, the only player to scored 500+ in a CPL season. He has been playing for TKR since 2016 and has proved to be an asset. He won the Player of the Tournament award. Darren Bravo was the second-highest scorer for the Knight Riders in the last tournament. The Southpaw has been a consistent performer for the side.
Knight riders got more than 60% of win record against the opponent team St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Barbados Tridents, and Guyana Amazon Warriors. So Knight Riders will be high on confidence when they take on these opponents. However, Riders may face a tough battle against Jamaica Tallawahs as they got just 35% wins record against them.
Trinbago Knight Riders, the last 2 seasons CPL champion and easily the most star-studded team of CPL 2019 are one of the favorites to win the CPL 2019.
With increased fans and viewership each passing year, Caribbean Premier League has become one of the most-awaited tournaments of 2019. Previous CPL seasons have produced many thrillers and some of the greatest performances. In CPL, we have champion teams like Jamaica Tallawahs, Barbados Tridents and Trinbago Knight Riders and promising and probable champions Guyana Amazon Warriors or St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.
Barbados Tridents have got a very good squad this time. With players like Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Alex Hales, mystery spinner Sandeep Lamichhane, Wahab Riaz, they can produce better results this time, after 3 gloomy years. Guyana Amazon Warriors have been quite consistent, but this time they must be yearning to touch and feel the CPL trophy for the first time and their players like Shimron Hetmyer, Shoaib Malik, Keemo Paul, and Nicholas Pooran hold the key to their success. Jamaica Tallawahs’s batting line up looks threatening for any bowling unit as they have West Indies’ legendary opener Chris Gayle and fitting power-hitter Andre Russell. Though, except Oshane Thomas, they don’t have reputed bowlers which may have a slight impact on their results. St Kitts & Nevis Patriots did not play in the first two seasons, but their performances in the past two years were remarkable. They have the ability to reach the playoffs round provided Evin Lewis, Carlos Brathwaite, and Sheldon Cottrell contribute as per their reputations. St Lucia Zouks would want to repeat their performances of 2016 when they had managed to reach top-four. All their hopes rest on performances of Darren Sammy, Malinga, and Thisara Perera.
At the end of the season, Chris Gayle, Shai Hope, Kieron Pollard or Andre Russell could be found prominently in the chart of most-runs while among the bowlers, Malinga, Sunil Narine, Sheldon Cottrell, Wahab Riaz, Dwayne Bravo may dominate the show. A lot can be expected from Barbadian all-rounder Jason Holder and he could just top the all-rounder’s chart this season.
Just considering group-stages matches between CPL 2013 and 2018, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders have the highest winning ratio of 60.71% from their 56 matches, followed by Jamaica Tallawahs(59%), Barbados (44.64%), St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (42%) and St Lucia Stars (30%). We predict St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Barbados Tridents may get their place in top-four, while one of the teams - Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs or Trinbago Knight Riders would clinch the CPL trophy.
