David Warner commits to full BBL season, Steve Smith signs three-year deal with Sydney Sixers

David Warner has signed a new two-year deal with Sydney Thunder, marking his first availability for a full BBL season. Meanwhile, Steven Smith has inked a three-year contract with Sydney Sixers, extending his potential participation in the competition even beyond his Test career.

Test teammates Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey have also renewed their contracts, re-signing with Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers respectively, as they prepare for the BBL's 14th edition.

These players are expected to be available following the conclusion of the Sydney Test against India and before their departure for the Sri Lanka tour on January 21, coinciding with the start of the BBL's knockout stage. However, with Warner having retired from international cricket, he is fully committed to the entire BBL season. Over the last two years, Warner played eight matches for Thunder, including a memorable appearance at the SCG where he arrived by helicopter.

Syndey Thunder Comments on Warner's BBL Commitment

Trent Copeland, Thunder's general manager, expressed excitement about David Warner's participation, highlighting his global appeal, especially among South Asian communities in Sydney's west. "With nearly 20 years of T20 experience, Davey is a world-class talent, and now that he's retired from international cricket, we can count on his full focus and commitment for the entire tournament, including the finals," Copeland said.

Steve Smith Signs 3 - Year Deal with Sydney Sixers

Steve Smith, on the other hand, is set to be available for up to four Sixers games, including a possible derby against Warner's Thunder. If he decides to retire from Test cricket in the next three years, Smith could potentially play a full BBL season rather than just making cameo appearances. Despite this possibility, Smith remains non-committal about his Australia career timeline, stating, "I'm just enjoying playing at the moment. I'm excited about the upcoming summer, especially the challenge of playing India, one of the best Test teams in the world."

Smith, currently one of Australia's Test openers, replaced Warner earlier this year, though the debate over whether he will retain that role continues. He mentioned ongoing discussions about his position in the team and his readiness to bat anywhere.
