David Wiese Retires from International Cricket

David Wiese, the experienced all-rounder for Namibia has signalled his possible retirement from international cricket after Namibia lost to England at the T20 World Cup by 41 runs. The 39-year-old Namibian player, who started playing for the Namibia cricket team in the year 2021, said that he is not sure about his future in international cricket but he wants to play professional cricket for a few more years.

“I mean, next year's T20 World Cup is still two years away. I'm 39 years old now, so, in terms of international cricket, I don't know if there's much left in me,” he said to the media after the match.

“I still like to play the game for a couple more years, I feel like I've still got a lot to contribute and a lot to play. But I just feel like what better place to end a special career for me than Namibia? I've had a lot of good times with them and to play my last game for them, possibly at a World Cup against a world-class team like England, it just seemed like the right time.”

Wiese during the England vs Namibia Match

After the retirement of Nikolaas Davin, Wiese had to come to bat and struck 27 off 12 balls. Even after his commendable effort, England won the match.

On this unusual strategic move, Wiese said, “That's the first time I've personally been involved in it. I've seen it happen in other games. I think it's only happened a handful of times but, in all fairness, tactically, you can see it happening a bit more in this game as the game moves on and moves forward and tactics come into place, I'm sure you'll see that happen a lot more.”

Namibia’s Performance in T20 World Cup 2024

Out of all the matches played in the T20 World Cup 2024, Namibia has only won once against Oman in a Super Over and faced losses at the hands of Scotland, Australia and England. Nevertheless, the contributions and leadership of David Wiese proved to be remarkable and would bring a positive end to his international career.
