Gautam Gambhir Interviews for Indian Head Coach Position
India’s renowned opener Gautam Gambhir has recently stepped in for the position of the head coach of India. He further formalised his application by interviewing with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the BCCI on 18th June (Tuesday).
The committee consists of former cricketers including Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshana Naik and is responsible for filtering and recommending candidates for the particular post. As for the applications, the number remains unknown, although the BCCI had set a deadline for 27th May earlier. Moreover, informal communication was observed between the panel members and Gambhir even during IPL 2024.
Gambhir’s Experience with Coaching
In the latest season of the IPL 2024, Gambhir was instrumental in helping the Kolkata Knight Riders secure their third IPL trophy. After successfully coaching the Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2022 and 2023 and leading them to the playoffs both times, this recent role has added to Gambhir’s coaching experience.
Gambhir expressed his wish to take some time and decide on applying for the post during IPL 2024. He openly declared his desire to coach the Indian team during an event in Abu Dhabi this year. "Look, I would love to coach the Indian team," he expressed. "There is no bigger honour. You are representing 140 crore Indians. And more across the globe as well. And when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that?"
Plans for Team India
Talking about his plans for aiding India in winning a World Cup, Gambhir emphasized the strength of collective effort. "It's not me that will help India win the World Cup, it is 140 crore Indians that will help India win the World Cup," he stated. "If everyone starts praying for us, and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless, and yes, I would love to coach India." With his previous teammate VVS Laxman declining the offer for the role, Gambhir has emerged as the major contender for the position.
