Former Bangladesh national opener and current selection panel member, Hannan Sarkar, has decided to step down from his role after completing his tenure. Sarkar, who has served as a national selector, aims to transition into a coaching career, prompting his decision to leave the high-profile post.
Sources reveal that Sarkar officially submitted his resignation letter to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on February 1, expressing his intent to step away from selection duties. The 42-year-old confirmed the development, stating that he wished to serve his full tenure, which concludes on February 26, before stepping down.
A Shift Toward Coaching Aspirations
Sarkar explained his reasoning behind the decision, emphasizing his passion for coaching.
"Yes, I have handed them (the board) the letter yesterday to step down from the selection committee," Sarkar told Cricbuzz on Sunday, February 2. "I wish to have a career in coaching, and as a result, I don't want to continue as part of the national selection panel."
Sarkar further stated that he remains open to working with the BCB in a coaching capacity. "If BCB feels that they can include me as a coach in their set-up, in that case, I am ready to consider it," he added.
Sarkar’s Contribution to Bangladesh Cricket
A former cricketer with experience at the international level, Sarkar represented Bangladesh in 17 Test matches and 20 One Day Internationals (ODIs) during his two-year international career. Although his playing career was short-lived, he continued to contribute to Bangladesh cricket in various capacities.
Following his retirement from international cricket, Sarkar transitioned into talent development and joined the BCB as an age-level selector. His decade-long service as an Under-19 selector played a crucial role in shaping young talents in the country. Under his tenure, Bangladesh achieved significant milestones, including winning the U-19 Cricket World Cup in 2020, a historic first for the nation.
In 2024, Bangladesh’s U-19 squad also claimed their first-ever Asia Cup title under his guidance, further highlighting his impact at the youth level. His success in grooming young cricketers eventually earned him a position in the senior selection panel.
Future Prospects for Sarkar and Bangladesh Cricket
Sarkar’s departure from the selection panel marks a significant shift for Bangladesh cricket. As the board looks to fill the vacant position, his wealth of experience and success at the developmental level make him a strong candidate for a coaching role within the BCB setup. His aspirations to work closely with young cricketers could prove valuable in shaping the future of Bangladesh cricket.
Meanwhile, as Bangladesh continues its journey in international cricket, the focus also remains on strengthening the team’s core. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how the BCB moves forward in reshaping its selection committee and identifying future cricketing stars.
Additionally, as Bangladesh cricket evolves, there is growing interest among fans in various aspects of the sport, including best cricket betting sites in India, which provide enthusiasts with opportunities to engage with the game beyond the field.
Hannan Sarkar’s transition into coaching will be an exciting chapter in his career, and it remains to be seen how his expertise will contribute to the development of Bangladesh’s cricketing talent in the years to come.
