England delivered a dominanting performance that warmed the hearts of home supporters, culminating in a rain-affected victory over Australia. Harry Brook’s outstanding unbeaten 110 was pivotal in this match, signalling a potential turnaround in a series that had previously favoured the visitors.
With the teams set to clash again at Lord’s on Friday, Australia holds a 2-1 lead and will be eager to clinch the series at a venue that saw them endure criticism during last summer’s Ashes.
England triumphed by 46 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, thanks in part to Alex Carey’s solid innings of 77 not out for Australia. The match saw England initially falter, losing Phil Salt and Ben Duckett early to Mitchell Starc, leaving them at a precarious 11 for two in the third over. However, Will Jacks’ impressive 84 from No. 3, combined with Brook’s brilliance, propelled the team to 254 for four in the 38th over just ahead of the required run rate when rain interrupted play.
Brook’s Stunning Century and Livingstone’s Late Blitz Seal England’s Win
Brook’s innings featured 13 fours and two sixes, with his maiden ODI century coming off 87 balls. His ability to steer the innings, especially against Starc, could mark a turning point in his career. At just 25, Brook is still adapting to the demands of 50-over cricket, making this performance an important addition to his experience.
The evening showcased Brook’s remarkable shot-making, including powerful aerial drives and deft cuts, underscoring his reputation as a top-tier ball-striker. He emphasized the need for a calm mindset at the crease, countering earlier comments suggesting a carefree attitude: “You have to play fearlessly, but that doesn’t mean not caring about the outcome,” he clarified.
This was Brook’s first century against Australia in any format, a significant achievement as he prepares for more challenging encounters ahead. His innings was bolstered by a 156-run partnership with Jacks, who took on the early risks. Despite Cameron Green’s attempts to disrupt the momentum by dismissing Jacks and Jamie Smith, Liam Livingstone contributed 33 runs off just 20 balls, helping secure England’s lead on DLS before the rain arrived. The DLS method certainly might have had an impact on the people who bet on cricket for this game.
