In a historic decision, the ICC has announced that the winners of the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 will receive the same prize money as the men's champions. The announcement, made on Tuesday (September 17), marks a significant step toward gender equality in the sport. This decision was finalized during the ICC's annual conference in July.
The winning team of the upcoming tournament, set to be held in the UAE, will receive USD 2.34 million. This represents a remarkable 134% increase from the USD 1 million that Australia took home after winning the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa. Similarly, the runners-up will now earn USD 1.17 million, also a 134% jump from the USD 500,000 that South Africa received for their first-ever appearance in a final.
The prize money for the semi-finalists has also seen a substantial increase. Each losing semi-finalist will now receive USD 675,000, up from the USD 210,000 awarded in 2023. In total, the prize pool for the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup will be USD 7.96 million, an astonishing 225% increase from the USD 2.45 million distributed in the previous edition. This makes the ninth edition of the Women's T20 World Cup the first event in ICC history to offer prize money equality, ahead of the organization's initial target of 2030.
ICC's Commitment to Growing Women's Cricket
"This move aligns with the ICC's strategy to prioritize the women's game and accelerate its growth by 2032," the ICC said in a statement. "Teams will now receive equal prize money for the equivalent finishing position at comparable events and the same amount for winning a match at those events. The only reason the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 has a higher total prize pool is due to 10 additional teams participating and 32 more matches being played."
During the group stages, winners of individual matches will be awarded USD 31,154. The six teams eliminated before the semi-finals will share a prize pool of USD 1.35 million, divided based on their standings. This is a significant increase from the USD 180,000 that was evenly split among teams in 2023. Teams finishing third or fourth in their group will earn USD 270,000 each, while the fifth-placed teams will take home USD 135,000.
In other news, the ICC has announced a minor schedule change for the October 5 double-header in Sharjah. Australia will now face Sri Lanka in the afternoon match, with Bangladesh taking on England in the evening slot. If you're looking to bet on cricket, this schedule change could impact your strategies, especially if you have bets placed on specific match outcomes or player performances.
