ICC to Decide Champions Trophy Venue After November 29 Meeting

ICC to Decide Champions Trophy Venue After November 29 Meeting

The ICC has scheduled a board meeting on November 29 to finalize key details for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The discussions will focus on confirming the tournament's venue and format, with officials looking to settle logistical aspects. This decision is vital for effective planning and ensuring the event runs smoothly, as the governing body strives to create optimal conditions for one of cricket's most prestigious competitions.

ICC Organised Board Meeting for Final Take on Champions Trophy

India's reluctance to travel to Pakistan, coupled with Pakistan's refusal to accept a hybrid model allowing India to play in a neutral country, means the ICC may need to vote on a resolution. The upcoming virtual meeting will allow members to discuss the issue, and a final decision could be made once the ICC Board reaches a consensus on how to proceed with the 2025 Champions Trophy.

The ICC has set aside a window for the eight-team ODI tournament between February 19 and March, but the exact dates and schedule remain unconfirmed. Typically, the ICC announces tournament schedules 100 days in advance, but this has not occurred yet. As of now, the governing body has not provided official confirmation or specific details regarding the 2025 Champions Trophy.

The delay in announcing the Champions Trophy schedule stems from the Indian government's refusal to permit Rohit Sharma’s team to travel to Pakistan, a decision shared with the ICC two weeks ago. In response, the PCB, which was granted hosting rights in 2021, requested clarification from the ICC on the BCCI's position and the timing of the notice but has not received a response.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has consistently insisted on hosting the full Champions Trophy in Pakistan, with matches scheduled across Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. He expressed willingness to engage in talks with the BCCI to resolve the impasse. An ICC spokesperson confirmed Friday's meeting, but the PCB has yet to release an official statement regarding the ongoing discussions.

Members of ICC for the Upcoming Board Meeting for Champions Trophy

The ICC Board consists of representatives from 12 Full Member nations, three from Associate countries, an independent director, and the Chairman and CEO. The upcoming meeting will mark the end of Greg Barclay's term as the ICC Chairman, as he prepares to hand over the role to his successor.

On December 1st, Greg Barclay will pass the leadership to Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary. Shah, instrumental in the Champions Trophy talks, will assume the role during a significant transition for the ICC, marking a new chapter in the organization’s governance of global cricket.

Mohsin Naqvi, serving as both the PCB chairman and Pakistan's interior minister, holds a pivotal role in the country's government. Recently, he has been focused on managing political unrest in Islamabad, dealing with protests organized by the PTI, the political party of former Prime Minister and cricket captain Imran Khan.

The change in venue or hybrid model can certainly impact the cricket betting odds as it doesn't favour the home side and also impact hugely on the outcome of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
