IND vs BAN 2nd Test: Will Spinners Rule the Roost?

The second and final Test of the India-Bangladesh series, starting on September 27, at Green Park in Kanpur is expected to provide a contrasting challenge compared to the first Test in Chennai. With the surface in Kanpur made of black soil, the pitch is likely to offer lower bounce and slower conditions as the game progresses, a significant departure from the red-soil bounce seen in the first Test.
1. Pitch Conditions: Contrast with Chennai
Unlike Chennai's red-soil pitch, which offered consistent bounce across all four days, the black-soil surface at Kanpur is expected to become flatter with reduced bounce as the Test wears on. The Chepauk pitch provided good bounce for both seamers and spinners, helping fast bowlers and allowing spinners like R. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja to exploit the turn and bounce. In contrast, the Kanpur pitch will likely be slower, with diminishing bounce, placing more emphasis on patience from both batters and bowlers.
2. Impact on Team Selections
Given the expected slower nature of the Kanpur pitch, both India and Bangladesh might reconsider their team compositions. India may opt to replace a third seamer with an additional spinner, with Kuldeep Yadav or Axar Patel in line for selection alongside Ashwin and Jadeja. Bangladesh could bring in left-arm spinner Taijul Islam to strengthen their spin attack, particularly if Shakib Al Hasan plays as a batsman only due to his injury concerns. Should Shakib be unavailable, off-spinner Nayeem Hasan might also be considered as part of a three-spinner strategy.
3. Shakib Al Hasan's Injury Concerns
Bangladesh's selector Hannan Sarkar indicated that Shakib's participation in the second Test is uncertain due to a finger injury sustained in Chennai. Shakib’s left index finger, already problematic, took another blow while batting on the fourth day of the first Test.
If Shakib plays as an all-rounder, Bangladesh could opt for three spinners by including Taijul Islam in place of Nahid Rana. However, if Shakib is unable to bowl, Nayeem Hasan could feature as an additional spin option.
4. Previous Tests at Kanpur
The last Test held in Kanpur, against New Zealand in 2021, saw India field three spinners – Ashwin, Jadeja, and Axar Patel. Both that match and the one in 2016 also against New Zealand, lasted all five days, showcasing the endurance required to win on such surfaces.
While India won comfortably in 2016, New Zealand managed to draw the game in 2021, with their batters showing resilience against India’s spinners.
5. Batsmen Could Benefit
With the absence of sharp bounce or drastic turn, the Kanpur pitch could offer batters an opportunity to score big runs. In the 2021 Test at Kanpur, Shreyas Iyer scored a century and a fifty on debut, while New Zealand’s Tom Latham displayed exceptional defensive skills, scoring two half-centuries against India’s spinners. Both teams will need to adapt to the changing nature of the surface in Kanpur, with strategy adjustments likely revolving around spin bowling and the fitness of key players like Shakib Al Hasan.
The match promises to test the patience and skill of both batsmen and bowlers alike. When considering cricket betting tips, keep an eye on the performance of the spinners and the ability of the batsmen to handle the slower pace.
