IPL 2025: BCCI to Decide on Player Retention Policy and Mega Auction Venue

As per reports, the IPL’s governing council (GC) plans to unveil the retention policies for the upcoming IPL season once the officials meet up this Saturday in Bengaluru. The report further added that a formal decision is imminent and the rules will be made public latest by Sunday if not Saturday. Retention rules allow franchises to preserve their in-form players and foster continuity.
It is believed that the decision to hold the meeting comes at very short notice. Sources from the governing council have stated that the meeting was arranged at the last minute and the invitations were issued only on Friday. Before the retention rules are made available to all, there is a high chance that the rules will be discussed at the general body meeting scheduled for Sunday.
Riyadh in the Running for Mega Auction Host
Back in 2022, IPL teams were expected to hold a maximum of four players. But the league has evolved in leaps and bounds in recent years and the teams now have different opinions on player retention policy. Speculation among the viewers is rife regarding the number of retentions that will be permitted by the BCCI. Many sources believe it will be somewhere in the range of 2 to 8 retentions but BCCI may have other ideas and zero down to the halfway point i.e. 5-6 which would involve the RTM (Right to Match) option.
Several other agendas such as the scheduling of the IPL mega auction would also be on the cards as well. The date and the venue of the mega auction are yet to be finalized at this stage. But there is a possibility that a decision regarding that will be taken in the upcoming GC meeting this Sunday. Many experts believe that Riyadh, Saudi Arabia could emerge as the next favorite destination after Dubai to hold the mega 2025 IPL auction.
