IPL 2025 Mega Auction - New Rules for Player Retention

IPL 2025 Mega Auction - New Rules for Player Retention

IPL 2025 Mega Auctions are scheduled to take place but before that BCCI has come up with new rules for player retention. These new rules are also related to player’s salaries and contracts with the franchises.

BCCI has introduced the right-to-match (RTM) rule again for the franchises. The franchises can now retain 5 players before the mega auction.

"It is at the discretion of the IPL franchise to choose their combination for retentions and RTMs," the IPL release said. "The six retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players (Indian and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped [Indians] players."

With RTM, IPL is also set to continue with the Impact Player rule till 2027 and the auction purse for each franchise has increased by INR 20 crore and is now INR 120 crore.

Once the mega auctions are finished, betting on IPL will pick up the pace among the punters from across the globe.

IPL 2025 - Retention Slabs

In order to retain 5 players for the team, the franchise needs to follow a few rules.

  • For the first three retentions: INR 18 crore, INR 14 crore, and INR 11 crore

  • For the next two: INR 18 crore and INR 14 crore

There are no changes in the uncapped player retention rule and the slab stays at INR 4 crore. If a franchise retains five capped players and one uncapped player, INR 79 Crore will be gone from their purse and they will be going for the auction with just INR 41 Crore.

The retained players will be announced soon by every franchise and the rest of the team will be built around those players.

IPL 2025 - Impact Player Rule is Here To Stay

There were a lot of talks regarding the impact player rule in IPL after the previous season. BCCI has made a final decision to keep the rule till 2027 and the decision has been taken to the development of all-rounders.

The Impact Player rule has created some friction among the cricket pundits regarding the performance of the bowlers in the league. However, BCCI has been firm to keep the rule for another 3 seasons of IPL.

RTM Card - An Extra Opportunity for Final Bidder

BCCI has reintroduced the RTM rule for IPL mega auctions. According to this rule, a franchise can buy back a player during the auction by matching the bid made by another franchise.

To advance the cause of the players, the IPL has now modified the rule. It now reads: "The highest bidder will be given one final opportunity to raise their bid for a player before the team holding the RTM card can exercise their right.”

Injury replacements and player loans

Till the last season of IPL, franchises were supposed to sign a replacement for an injured player before their 7th fixture in the league. However, now they can sign a player before the 12th match.

A player loan process will also be introduced where the franchises can sign a player on loan for the season or for a few matches.

The cricket betting apps will have the odds for IPL 2025 after the mega auction.
