IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Why did Royal Challengers Bangalore let Captain Faf du Plessis Go?

Indian Premier League is in the news again as the franchises have released the list of the retained players for IPL 2025. Now, the management of all the franchises will shift their focus to building the team around the retained players.

As the retention list was released, some players were released from their respective teams. The release of RCB skipper Faf du Plessis came out as a shock to the IPL fans across the globe.

Faf du Plessis joined Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2022 from Chennai Super Kings. He was given the responsibility to lead the team as Virat Kohli resigned from the position during the same year.

Under his captaincy, the franchise saw many ups and downs but his individual performance was unquestionable. However, the management decided to part ways with the player due to multiple reasons.

Reasons Why RCB Let Faf du Plessis Go?

There are multiple reasons why South African player was released from the franchise. The decision came as a shock but it was collectively taken by the management, head coach Andy Flower and Director of Cricket Mo Bobat.

According to Andy Flower, the biggest reason for Faf’s release was the age factor. Faf du Plessis is 40 and the team wants to look beyond the Proteas player for the leadership role.

“Last year, Faf’s captaincy and leadership — in what was a really tough season, particularly in the first half — was sensational. He was very much a part of leading the revival that took us to the finals… He is a guy that we spent a lot of time discussing. Faf is 40 now and still playing very good cricket. He’s just led his CPL side to victory very recently in the Caribbean and I’m not surprised by that,” Flower explained in a video posted by the franchise.

According to Mo Bat, the new retention rules made it difficult for the franchise and the player to come on the right page. 

“Obviously, the way that these retention bands and purse are set out, it does make it difficult to get everything you want. Faf, I’m sure, will admit himself, is in the latter part of his career now,” explained Mo in the same video.
