In 2020, Shreyas Iyer, under the guidance of Ricky Ponting, led the Delhi Capitals to the IPL finals, where they were defeated by the Mumbai Indians. However, an unfortunate shoulder injury in the following year curtailed his IPL season, leading to Rishabh Pant's appointment as captain, a role he retained even after Iyer's return.
Since Iyer's departure, Delhi Capitals have struggled to qualify for the playoffs. As Iyer now seeks a lucrative IPL contract after guiding KKR to the title, Delhi Capitals have a prime opportunity to rectify their past mistake and re-sign their former captain.
While they have a significant amount of money to spend in the upcoming auction, they will face stiff competition from teams like Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings, who are also interested in acquiring Iyer's services. If these teams miss out on Iyer, Delhi Capitals will have a golden chance to bring him back to the franchise and potentially lead them to IPL glory.
