Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are gearing up for the 2025 IPL season by securing key players from last year’s squad. Leading the list of retentions is South African power-hitter Heinrich Klaasen, who will receive INR 23 crore (approximately $2.74 million). Klaasen, known for his explosive batting, was one of SRH’s standout performers in 2024. Alongside him, Australian allrounder and 2024 team captain Pat Cummins will be retained for INR 18 crore (around $2.14 million), while Indian allrounder Abhishek Sharma, another crucial player, is set to earn INR 14 crore ($1.67 million).
Travis Head and Nitish Kumar Reddy are also expected to be retained soon. Head had an outstanding season opening for SRH, forming a formidable partnership with Abhishek, while Reddy's all-round abilities bolstered the team’s balance. SRH reached the IPL final in 2024 under Cummins' leadership, and the franchise seems set to maintain its core group to build on last season's success.
Cummins, who led the team to the final, will continue as captain for IPL 2025. His leadership, combined with coach Daniel Vettori’s guidance, helped SRH make a remarkable comeback after three disappointing seasons.
The IPL has set October 31 as the retention deadline for the 2025 season, with a purse of INR 120 crore for the auction. Each franchise can retain up to six players, including a maximum of five capped players, with a mix of retention deals and right-to-match (RTM) cards.
Sunrisers Back Power Hitters Leave Out Travis Head
Sunrisers’ decision to retain Klaasen, Cummins, and Abhishek highlights their emphasis on continuity and stability. Klaasen’s explosive form over the past two seasons, where he amassed 927 runs at a strike rate of 174, has made him one of the most dangerous T20 batters in the game. His retention represents a massive 338% increase from the INR 5.25 crore he was bought for in 2023. Abhishek, who earned an India T20I call-up in 2024, will see a 115% increase in his earnings, reflecting his impressive form with a strike rate of 194.84 this year.
Reddy, a rising star, proved his value to SRH in 2024 and made his India debut with a standout performance against Bangladesh. His retention solidifies SRH's investment in young talent. If SRH completes all five retentions, they will have one RTM card remaining for the auction, which can be used to secure an uncapped Indian player. With a strong retained core, SRH will be eyeing another deep run in IPL 2025 which will further bolster their betting odds offered by the top cricket betting sites to win the title.
