Ireland vs South Africa: Ireland Announces Squad for T20 and ODI Format

Cricket Ireland has announced their final squads for the upcoming Ireland vs South Africa T20i and ODI series. The hosts are scheduled to play a 2-match T20i and 3-match ODI series against the Proteas starting the last week of September.

Ireland has made some major changes in the squad for both formats. The biggest change has been the exclusion of Ireland’s Test skipper Andy Balbirnie from the T20 format.

He is part of the ODI format but to make sure Ireland has good depth in their batting unit, Balbirnie is expected to be replaced by Lorcan Tucker at the top order.

"One area we will explore on this tour is the top order in our T20 squad," Andrew White, Ireland's national selector, said. "We'll be looking at introducing a new dynamic, with Andrew Balbirnie sitting out the T20Is on this occasion. There are only two T20Is in the upcoming series, but they will offer important opportunities as we try to increase our levels of performance again."

Andrew Balbirnie is Ireland’s most experienced player. He is also the 2nd highest scorer in the T20 format for Ireland. He has 2392 runs in 110 T20i matches at an average of 23.45 with a strike rate of 123.23.

His replacement at the top order Lorcan Tucker has also done well in the shortest format of the game. Tucker has been part of 74 T20i and has 1317 runs on his name at an average of 21.24 with a strike rate of 123.31.

The removal of Andrew is a strategic step for Ireland. However, he will be part of the ODI format for Ireland against South Africa.
