Jos Buttler Steps Down as England's White-Ball Captain After Champions Trophy 2025

Jos Buttler Steps Down as England's White-Ball Captain After Champions Trophy 2025

Jos Buttler has announced his decision to step down as England's white-ball captain following the team's early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The 34-year-old made the announcement in Karachi ahead of England's final league game against South Africa, marking the end of a challenging campaign.

"It's the right decision for me, it's the right decision for the team, and hopefully somebody else can come in and work closely alongside Baz [Brendon McCullum] to take the team back to where it needs to be," Buttler stated during a press conference on Friday (February 28).

England’s Struggles Lead to Leadership Change

England's exit from the Champions Trophy came after consecutive defeats to Australia and Afghanistan in Lahore, continuing their poor run in ODI cricket. Buttler admitted that these results, along with England’s struggles in previous tournaments, influenced his decision.

"Yeah, I think it's quite clear that this tournament was going to be important results-wise for my captaincy. Obviously, two losses and being out of the tournament with a bit of a hangover from previous tournaments made me realize that I had reached the end of the road," Buttler explained.

England's downward spiral in ODI cricket had already been evident before the tournament. Just a week prior, they suffered a 0-3 whitewash against India, which added to their woes. This decline followed a disappointing group-stage exit in the 2023 ODI World Cup and a semifinal loss in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

A Legacy of Highs and Lows

Buttler took charge of England's white-ball sides after Eoin Morgan retired in 2022. His captaincy started on a high, leading England to victory in the T20 World Cup in Australia later that year. However, results took a downturn, with England struggling in both ODIs and T20Is thereafter.

In a bid to turn things around, the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) appointed Brendon McCullum as head coach for white-ball cricket in 2025, adding to his existing Test coaching duties. However, the partnership failed to deliver immediate results, with England losing nine of their last 10 white-ball matches under Buttler’s leadership this year.

Overall, Buttler captained England in 44 ODIs and 51 T20Is, winning 18 and 26 matches, respectively. He finished with the second-worst win-loss ratio for an England ODI captain with a minimum of 15 games led.

McCullum’s Reaction and England’s Future

McCullum acknowledged Buttler’s contributions and expressed sadness over his departure. "I feel incredibly sad for Jos. We've all seen how much he has invested in captaining his country and trying to get the very best out of those guys around him," McCullum said.

"People forget he won the World Cup a couple of years ago, and that can never be taken away from him. He's done a significant job, often without his best players available. It is incredibly unselfish from Jos to step aside and leave the post to someone else."

While Buttler is stepping down as captain, he remains a key player for England. McCullum emphasized the importance of keeping Buttler in the squad and maximizing his impact in future matches.

As England looks ahead, the search for a new white-ball captain begins. The incoming leader will face the challenge of rebuilding England’s limited-overs team and regaining their competitive edge in international cricket. Meanwhile, Buttler can now focus solely on his batting and look to contribute to the team's resurgence in a new role.
