Kings XI Punjab Review
KKR picked Sam Curran for Mujeeb and it paid off well for them. Gayle ended the first over with two consecutive boundaries to Sandeep Warrier. After quiet third over, Rahul fell to Warrier’s slower ball while Gayle could not escape the trap and lost his wicket to Warrier’s short ball. KXIP were two down with just 41 on the board in six overs. Nicholas Pooran hit 2 sixes and 2 fours in the next two overs and his another six in 10th took KXIP to 84. Pooran’s sparkling inning came to an end in the 11th over, after adding 69 runs along with Agarwal. Agarwal looked good for his 36 runs before getting run out in the 14th over. Mandeep and Curran added 38 in next 24 balls and Mandeep made an exit in the 18th over. They could fetch just 10 from 19th over off Russell but Curran smashed Gurney 3 fours and one six taking Kings to 183.
Shami once again opened well for KXIP, giving just 3 runs in the first over and 7 in his next but Arshdeep conceded 25 in his two overs. R Ashwin and Tye were expensive in fifth and sixth overs conceding 27 runs but at the end, Tye managed to get rid of Lynn. From overs 7-10 KXIP allowed just 36 runs and R Ashwin removed Uthappa in the 11th. KXIP could not keep Gill in check for long and he smashed R Ashwin for 18 runs. Though Shami removed Russell in the 15th over, the damage was already done. In the 18th over Curran got onslaughts from Karthik, eventually, they lost the match and knocked out of IPL 2019.
Curran scored 55 off just 24 balls that included 7 fours and 2 sixes. Pooran scored 48 in 27 balls with half of his runs came from sixes. Shami took 1 wicket for just 15 runs, R Ashwin and Tye got 1 wicket each but gave away 79 runs.
Kolkata Knight Riders Review
Karthik had no hesitation to go for chasing, considering the dew factor. Sandeep Warrier conceded 10 in the first over while Gurney bowled well to give just 3 in the second over. With Warrier taking Rahul’s wicket and Narine’s economical fourth over, the pressure was built-up on KXIP batsmen. Warrier got the big scalp of Gayle with the short delivery and the powerplay went in KKR’s favor. It took a while before KKR could break the partnership of Pooran and Agarwal. KKR conceded 41 runs from overs 11-15 but got the wickets of Pooran and Agarwal. But the bowlers could not stop Curran’s onslaught and gave away 58 runs in last five overs, 22 of which came in the 20th over. Still, the target of 184 was not a major concern for KKR.
Lynn and Gill started the run chase cautiously, with just 6 runs off first 10 balls. The first six came from Lynn off the 5th ball of the second over. Lynn accelerated in the fourth over with 3 consecutive fours. He departed in the sixth over after hitting another six and a four as KKR reached 62. Uthappa hit two fours and a six to M Ashwin in the 9th over. At halfway, KKR were in a strong position as they needed 86 with 9 wickets remaining. Soon Uthappa fell to R Ashwin but Shubman took the charge and in the 13th over he smashed a couple of sixes and a four. Russell scored quick 12 balls 24 and added 50 runs along with Gill. Karthik’s two fours and a six to Curran ended the match in the 18 overs, which helped them to improve the net run rate too.
Gill was the Man of the Match for his 49 balls 65. Lynn scored 46 off 22 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes. Warrier grabbed two crucial wickets for 31 runs and Nitish Rana bagged 1 for 8 runs in his 1 over.
