Sunil Gavaskar Pays Final Honors to Padmakar Shivalkar

This Monday mourned the loss of cricket legend Padmakar Shivalkar, who played for Mumbai as an ace spinner. Padmakar took around 600 wickets during his 30 years of cricket career but was refrained from getting a chance to play for the national team.

The cricket fraternity mourns the loss of cricket maestro Shivalkar who played over 124 matches for Mumbai. He consistently bowled at a spectacular average of 19.69 and scalped almost 590 wickets in all. Shivalkar also received the remarkable CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 from the BCCI for his contribution to cricket.

Former Indian skipper Dilip Vengsarkar said in an interview that he won the maximum number of matches for the West Zone and Bombay. He agreed that it was unfortunate that the national squad could not witness his part in the play.

Unsung Cricket Legend of India, Shivalkar Left the World

Padmakar Shivalkar debuted in the Ranji Trophy in his early twenties during the 1961-62 season. After that, he played for Mumbai until the late 1980s, when he was already in his forties.

The cricket community praises his shining career as he played 12 main matches for Mumbai. Spinner Shivalkar was known for his career as an avid left-arm spinner and was compared to Bishan Singh Bedi. Shivalkar was compared to Bedi’s performance longevity who already left a benchmark with his performances in domestic games.

Former Indian Captain Sunil Gavaskar regrets being unable to convince selectors about Padmakar’s entry to the National Test squad. He further revealed that Shivalkar deserved to wear an Indian cap more than several others who had the opportunity.

Standout Performances by Shivalkar Led Mumbai to Many Triumphs

Despite not getting to wear a National cap, Padmakar Shivalkar has always been a pillar to the Mumbai team. No one could challenge his bowling prowess on domestic grounds, and his dominance amongst the poised domestic spinners was also known to national-level players.

The legendary Shivalkar's finest spell was witnessed when he contested the Ranji Trophy Finals. He remained associated with Mumbai Cricket as the selector and coach. MCA President Ajinkya said Padmakar’s loyalty to the game, coaching style, and terrific bowling line will be remembered as a treasured cricket legacy!

With the rise of digital platforms, cricket enthusiasts today can stay connected to the game in various ways. Many fans now engage with online cricket betting apps, which provide a platform to analyze player performances, predict match outcomes, and experience the thrill of the game in real-time. While Shivalkar never got a chance to play for India, his legacy continues to inspire cricket lovers, whether they follow domestic cricket or engage in discussions about legendary players.
