Sri Lanka's expericend all-rounder, Angelo Matthews who probably has played his last T20 World Cup refelcted on his team's dismal performance and an early exit from the tournament. Matthews highlighted key points on where excatly Sri Lanka went wrong and he has blamed his team's batters for their below par performance which has costed the Lankan's big time as for the first time, Sri Lanka will not be part of the super 8 stage.
Sri Lanka’s Performance in the T20 World Cup 2024
Sri Lanka’s campaign got off to an embarrassing start with a miserable 77 runs against South Africa. This misfortune followed them to Dallas against Bangladesh where they went from a respectable 100/3 to a mere 124/9 in the last 6 overs. Their last effort was a washed-out match against Nepal in Florida, which ended their odds of making it to the Super Eights.
Angelo Mathews’s remarks
In his remarks, Mathews stated, “I think those two matches [vs South Africa & Bangladesh] were not successful as the batsmen were unsuccessful. The fielders and bowlers did a great job even for those few scores. They did well in both matches, and both were very competitive. But unfortunately, we couldn’t win.”
He stressed that every match is important in highly competitive tournaments such as the World Cup. "It’s really hard to come forward in a tournament like this if we lose even one match. It was hard for us after losing the first two matches. The Nepal match was also unfortunately abandoned by the rain. So, we have only one match left now. We hope to play that well and win."
Talking about the team, Mathews pointed out the poor batting performances as the probable cause for losses but also expressed optimism for the future. “I think all the bowlers did a great job. Unfortunately, that was only the batsmen who failed a bit. I think we lost both matches due to the mistakes made by the batsmen.”
