Mumbai Indians Review

Mumbai finally managed to hold their nerves in a thrilling final that swung multiple times towards each team until Malinga dealt the final blow. The IPL final did not just go to the final over but it went to the final ball as well and Mumbai had the best in business, Lasith Malinga, to see them home. This is Mumbai's 4th title is 5 IPL finals. They love getting to the finals and then know how to win them.

Rohit Sharma won the crucial toss in the final and surprisingly chose to bat first. The thinking could have been putting up the scoreboard pressure in the finals. But they have been chasing well throughout the tournament and at the halfway stage Mumbai was left to question the decision to bat first. They began well with Rohit Sharma and De Kock putting up a 45 run partnership within 5 overs. However, Rohit Sharma and De Kock fell on the same score. Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan took them to 82 but Mumbai collapsed from 82 for 2 to 101 for 5 by the 15th over. Hardik Pandya tried to up the scoring rate but couldn’t do much damage. Kieron Pollard played till the end and eventually got Mumbai to 149 in 20 overs.

It was a below par score and Mumbai needed to bowl really well. And they found luck when Krunal Pandya got Du Plessis in the fourth over. But Mumbai took few quick in wickets of Raina, Rayudu, and Dhoni to reduce Chennai to 82 for 4 in the 13th over. They still needed Watson's wicket who was single-handedly taking Chennai to glory. And they got him run-out just at the right time in the 20th over with 2 balls left. Malinga needed to defend 2 off the last bowled a slower one to Thakur who as out LBW and Mumbai clinched the trophy by just 1 run.

Kieron Pollard was the top scorer with 41 off 25 at the strike rate of 164. Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock scored in the 20s. Other batsmen got starts but could not convert them. Jasprit Bumrah was the peak of the bowlers with 14 for 2 in the 4 overs. Rahul Chahar too bowled brilliantly for 14 for 1 in 4 overs. But it was Malinga who held his nerves to defend 9 in the final over to help Mumbai clinch the title.

Chennai Super Kings Review

Chennai Super Kings rarely lose a game that is in their grasp. This final was very much theirs until the 3 quarter of the match. But two crucial runouts of MS Dhoni and Shane Watson at crucial times pushed to a heartbreaking defeat in the finals of IPL 2019. This was their 8th appearance in the finals and 5th defeat in the finals.

Chennai lost an important toss but wouldn’t have minded bowling first on this helping surface. They have mostly been successful chasing throughout the IPL. After Mumbai raced to 45 in the 5th over, Shardul Thakur struck the first blow to get De Kock. Rohit went to Deepak Chahar immediately. Imran Tahir bowled well in the middle overs to get a couple of wickets without conceding too many runs. Mumbai at 101-5, Chennai were looking to stop the two big hitters, Hardik Pandya, and Kieron Pollard. They removed Pandya cheaply but could not get Pollard who helped Mumbai reach a below-par but fighting 149.

Chasing 150 to win the Cup, Chennai began well and sitting pretty at 70 for 1 in the 10th over. But then a mini-collapse ensued. In a matter of 4 overs, Chennai went from 70 for 1 to 82 for 4 that included a huge wicket of MS Dhoni. Bravo and Watson steadied the ship for a while. Watson was at his best again in the final and scored 19 of Krunal Pandya's over when 38 were required off 18 balls. In the final over facing Malinga Watson got out attempting a second run. Thakur could not read the slower ball from Malinga when 2 needed off the last ball and was out plumb in front. Chennai lost by just 1 run.

Deepak Chahar was the peak of the bowlers for Chennai picking up 3 wickets for 26 n 4 overs. Shardul Thakur and Imran Tahir took 2 wickets each. Shane Watson was the sole batsman who could get runs on this surface scoring 80 in 59 balls. Next best was Du Plessis with 26 runs. The rest could not contribute much and Chennai failed to get to their 4th IPL title in their 8th final.
