Mumbai Indians Review
Contrary to the general trend, MI opted to bat first after winning the toss. They were at 44 for the loss of one wicket after the mandatory powerplay as Rohit Sharma fell to Khaleel Ahmed after scoring 18 balls 24. SA Yadav and de Kock added 54 runs together in next 6 overs. MI was at 91 for 2 after 12 overs as Yadav got out to Ahmed and right in the next over Lewis fell to Nabi without making any impact. Hardik was sent back by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 16th over. Pollard got out to a slower one from Ahmed in the 20th over but then Krunal Pandya’s six led MI to go past 160.
Sran and Malinga opened well for MI giving away just 13 runs in first two overs. Bumrah struck in the last ball of the 4th over to remove Saha. With the wicket of Guptil on the first ball of the sixth, Bumrah was on a hat-trick but Williamson did not let it happen. Krunal Pandya got the ball in the 8th over and removed Williamson the first ball. They gave just 21 runs from over 7-10 and 26 from over 11-15, making SRH’s run-chase difficult. Hardik got Nabi in the 20th over, but he could not stop Pandey from hitting the six off the last ball which led the match to the super over.
In the super over, Pandey got run out the first ball and Bumrah took Nabi’s wicket and MI needed just 9 runs to win. Hardik directed MI’s victory with a six off the first ball of Nabi.
de Kock scored 69 in 59 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes. Sharma made 24 in 18 and Yadav made 23 in 17. Hardik and Krunal shared four wickets and 42 runs in their 8 overs. Bumrah took 2 for 31. In super over – Hardik’s 7 runs sealed the match while Bumrah took 1 wicket for 8 runs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad Review
This was the first time in IPL 2019 when SRH were playing without the Orange Capped David Warner. He was replaced by Guptill and Basil Thampi came in for Sandeep Sharma.
SRH bowlers did not allow MI to race away in the powerplay. After Rashid Khan’s extraordinary 5th overs, MI’s score was just 36. Ahmed struck before the end of the powerplay taking the big scalp of Sharma. The bowlers did a fabulous job to keep MI run rate under 8, giving 76 in 10 overs. Ahmed got his second wicket as he removed S Yadav. Nabi joined the party and removed Lewis after building the pressure with three dot balls. Though 14th over was expensive, they concede just 11 in the next two and got the wicket of Hardik off Kumar. Kumar’s penultimate over was once again economical with just 4 runs while Ahmed conceded 11 in the last over to receive the target of 163.
SRH were 30 for 0 in first three overs. After two boundaries to Bumrah, Saha got out on a slower one. SRH were 80 for 3 after 10 overs and Pandey was doing well. With Shankar and Abhishek’s wickets, SRH still needed 58 runs 33 balls. Nabi played a crucial role with his 31, that included 2 fours and 2 sixes. Nabi and Pandey added 49 runs together, the inning's highest partnership. After Nabi fell, SRH needed 9 in the last two balls. Pandey's smashing six off the last ball took the match to the one-over eliminator.
In the super over, SRH gave two wickets and the target for MI was 9. Rashid was given the ball to defend the target but he was overwhelmed by Pandya.
Pandey scored 47 balls 71 that included 8 fours and 2 sixes. Nabi supported Pandey well with 31 runs in just 20 balls. K Ahmed grabbed 3 wickets for 42 runs while Kumar and Nabi took 1 wicket each.
In super over – Nabi made 6 runs sealed the match and Rashid was wicketless for 9 runs.
Upcoming Matches:
MI are playing their last match of the IPL 2019 on 5th May, against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Though they are already qualified for the playoffs, they would want the slot in the 1st qualifier and hence they would not take the match lightly.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s last match in the group stage is against Royal Challengers Bangalore on 4th May at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. It is a must-win game for SRH. They are at number four right now they cannot afford to lose the match as RR, KXIP and KKR are too fighting for the fourth place, the only slot available for qualifying.
