Netherlands Cricketer Sybrand Engelbrecht Retires from International Cricket
Sybrand Engelbrecht, the South African-born cricketer who played for the Netherlands as a stellar batter has retired from international cricket. The 35-year-old played his last international match against Sri Lanka, which resulted in Netherlands’ defeat as well as exit from the T20 World Cup. Engelbrecht’s career came to a conclusion on a happy note with a superb boundary save, the video of which crossed over a million hits on Instagram reels.
Engelbrecht’s Journey in International Cricket
Engelbrecht first rose into the limelight in the year 2008 during the Under-19 World Cup, while playing for South Africa against Papua New Guinea, for a remarkable catch. Despite the commendable start, he retired in the year 2016 to work in the field of project management. Engelbrecht shifted to the Netherlands in 2021 and picked up cricket again for fun. Within a short time, he became a part of the National Cricket team and debuted in 2023.
Engelbrecht featured in 12 ODIs and 12 T20Is for the country, out of which 12 were a part of the World Cups. He made 385 runs in the ODIs with an average of 35.00 coupled with two spectacular centuries, whereas in T20Is he scored 280 runs with an average of 31.11 and a strike rate of 132.70. With these outstanding records, he was the highest run-scorer in the T20 World Cup for the Netherlands’. He scored 98 runs at an average of 24.50.
Conclusion of Engelbrecht’s International Career
The end of his international career included memorable moments such as the incredible catch in the outfield against Bangladesh during his last ODI match and a superhero-like dive to stop the ball from hitting the boundary against Sri Lanka in his last T20I. Looking back at his journey in the sphere of international cricket, Engelbrecht said he was happy for the experiences and opportunities he got.
"Traveling to different islands and experiencing their hospitality has been fantastic. Competing on the world stage has been a privilege," Engelbrecht stated. "We didn't just come here to fill up the numbers; we came to compete. There’s immense talent in our team, and I believe our experiences will serve us well in the future."
