New Zealand Appoints Jacob Oram as the New Bowling Coach for the IND vs NZ series in India

Former New Zealand’s right-arm pacer, Jacob Oram, has been appointed as the new bowling coach for New Zealand for the upcoming IND vs NZ series in India. The role will officially begin on 7th October.

Jacob Oram will be replacing Shane Jurgensen - who has been the bowling coach for the Kiwis since 2016. Jurgensen left the team in 2023 to become the head coach of Wellington Firebirds in New Zealand men's first-class cricket.

For a year the position was vacant but now Oram will be the guiding force for the Kiwi’s bowling unit. "I’m really excited to have the opportunity to be involved with the Blackcaps again. To be back involved with a team that means so much to me and has been a big part of my life is a real honour," Oram said in an interview after his selection.

New Zealand cricket is going through a transition. The country is witnessing a new wave of young bowlers in the team who are talented and hungry to perform. In this scenario, Oram’s experience will be a huge push.

Jacob Oram also said that he is there are some new bowlers making their way to the senior team and guiding them at this juncture of their career will prepare them for the biggest challenges in international cricket.

The New Wave of Bowlers in New Zealand

Ben Sears and Will O'Rourke are the two new faces in New Zealand cricket in the bowling department. Jacob Oram will be working with both and preparing them for the IND vs NZ series in India.

Jacob Oram’s Coaching Career

Jacob Oram announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in 2009. He stayed away from action for 5 years but made his comeback as a coach for “New Zealand A” in 2014.

In 2018, Jacob Oram joined New Zealand’s women’s cricket team as their bowling coach and remained with the squad for a year.

As a head coach, Jacob has guided the Manawatu cricket team - which is part of the Hawke Cup, a Non First Class cricket tournament in New Zealand.
His involvement will be crucial for the upcoming IND vs NZ series in India. India will host New Zealand for a 3-match Test series starting 16th October.  According to India's top betting sites, the hosts are favourites to win the series.
