For a casual fan, football in the Olympics might not be an exciting tournament like the Euro 2024 or Copa America. Olympic soccer is an opportunity to witness the rise of a young generation of superstars. For those unaware, men's tournament squads are currently limited to players under the age of 23 and a maximum of three overage players.
The matches will kick-start on July 24 and will end on 9th August. The tournament will be played under a round-robin format with teams divided into a group of four. The top two from each group will qualify for the knockout stages and thereon. Brazil is the current holder of the gold medal, having won the event on the last two occasions. Unfortunately, they couldn't qualify, thus presenting an opportunity for teams like France, Argentina, Spain and USA to win the prestigious medal. Let us look into the squads and other details of the 16 participants in the men's football at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Group A Olympic Football Teams
France Olympic Football Team
Coached by former France and Arsenal legend Thiery Henry, the Les Bleus have announced a 25-member squad, which will be trimmed down to 18 in the coming days. Les Bleus boasts some of the most promising young players in the world. Notable names include Michael Olise, the newest member of the Bayern Munich squad; PSG's Warren Zaire-Emery; and Bradley Barcola, both of whom were part of the French squad at Euro 2024. The overage players include Alexandre Lacazette(33) and Jean-Philippe Mateta(26), who by the way netted 19 goals for Crystal Palace last season and won their Player of the Year award.

Guinea Olympic Football Team
Guinea is participating in its first Olympics since 1968, but they will have a very little chance to qualify from a group that includes favourites France and the United States. They secured a spot in the Olympics after defeating Indonesia in the AFC-CAE playoff held early in May. Coached by Kaba Diawara, former Barcelona and current Getafe star, Ilaix Moriba will be the player to watch out for from the Guinea side.

New Zealand Olympic Football Team
In October, the All Whites defeated Fiji 9 nil in the OFC Olympic qualifying tournament held at Auckland to secure their Olympic qualification. With the exception of 2016—when they were unable to compete in Rio because of an ineligible player— New Zealand have made it to the event four out of the last five times. The team coached by Darren Bazeley, are yet to announce their squad for the Olympics. However, it is likely to include players like Riley Bidois, Jesse Randall, and Luis Toomey, who made a significant impact through the qualifying phase.

Group B Olympic Football Teams
Argentina Olympic Football Team
Coached by former Barcelona and Liverpool star, Javier Mascherano, Argentina will head into the Olympics with hopes of regaining the gold that they won in 2008, Beijing Olympics. Though they have announced a provisional squad for the Olympics, they are yet to name the overage players in the squad. Whoever those players are, it is very unlikely that Paris will witness Messi wearing the Argentinean colours for the Olympics. Meanwhile, players like Enzo Fernandez and Alejandro Garnacho are the notable exclusions from the squad despite being under 23.

Morocco Olympic Football Team
After appearing for the Olympics for the first time in 1964, Morocco has made eight successful appearances. They have qualified to the Olympics on the back of winning the U-23 African Cup of Nations by defeating Egypt 2-1 in the final. Tarik Sekitoui manages the squad. Given their impressive display at the last edition of the World Cup, and with the likes of Hakimi and Abde EZZALZOULI in the mix, Morocco will be expected to reach the business end of the tournament.

Ukraine Olympic Football Team
Ukraine do possess some of the most promising youngsters in the national team setup. Seven of the squad playing at the Euro 2024 were under 23. The likes of Sudakov, Chelsea’s Mudryk and Bournemouth defender Zabarnyi were part of that squad. Unfortunately, for coach Ruslan Rotan and Ukraine, they won't be available for the Olympics. Currently, U-23 Ukraine squad is participating in the Maurice Revello Tournament involving 10 teams, composed of players from U-17 to U-23 level.

Spain Olympic Football Team
La Roja led by Santi Denia has announced a provisional squad of 22 which is to be trimmed down by the time the event starts. The next-gen superstars like Nico Williams, Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Gavi have been excluded from the squad. However, the Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez and defender Pai Cubarsi, who were part of the Euros, along with Eric Garcia, have been named in the squad. Runner-ups in the last edition, Spain will have a great chance of replicating their gold medal performance from the 1992 Olympics this time around.

Having won a bronze medal in the 1968 Olympics, Japan will fancy their chances of progressing to the quarterfinals as toppers in the group. Japan's team, managed by Oiwa Go, will field an all under-23 team for the first time since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Though, the team will be without the services of their star player, Kubo Takefusa of Real Sociedad. Before their opening game, the Blue Samurai will feature in a friendly clash with France on July 17th.

Mali is known to be good at the under-17 to under-23 circuit as they recently finished as the second runner-up in the recently concluded U-17 World Cup. Ibrahim Diarra, who won the silver boot in the competition, is going to be one of the key members of the squad. Managed by Fanyeri Diarra, the Eagles will try to bring the gold back to Africa after a gap of 24 years.

Paraguay Olympic Football Team
Lastly, Paraguay moved past Brazil, the gold medal winners for 2020 and qualified to the Olympics along with Argentina from the CONMEBOL leg of the qualifiers. However, they were dealt with a 3-0 defeat to Chile in June, so their preparation for the Olympics hasn't been ideal. Los Guaranies , coached by Carlos Jara Saguier, will be making their comeback into the Olympics after four editions.
