The Punjab Kings entered the IPL 2025 auction with a clear objective: to rebuild their squad and challenge for the title. After a series of underwhelming seasons, the franchise made significant investments in both established stars and promising youngsters. Their aggressive bidding strategy saw them secure high-profile players like Shreyas Iyer and Yuzvendra Chahal, while also bolstering their bowling attack with experienced campaigners like Arshdeep Singh and Marcus Stoinis. With a balanced squad and a renewed focus, the Punjab Kings are poised to make a strong impact in the upcoming IPL season.
PBKS's Aggressive Bidding Strategy Pays Off
The Punjab Kings have struggled in recent IPL seasons, failing to qualify for the playoff’s since 2014 despite significant roster changes. Entering the 2025 mega auction with the highest purse value, they aimed to build a formidable squad.
The franchise retained only two players and aggressively pursued key targets in the auction. Their most significant acquisition was Shreyas Iyer, the former KKR captain. A bidding war ensued, with PBKS outbidding DC to secure Iyer for a hefty price. Another major signing was Yuzvendra Chahal, the 2022 Purple Cap winner. Released by Rajasthan Royals, Chahal joined PBKS for a substantial fee, bolstering their spin bowling attack.
Punjab Kings utilized the Right to Match card to retain Arshdeep Singh, significantly increasing his IPL salary to 18 crores. They also secured the services of experienced all-rounders Marcus Stoinis for 11 crores and Glenn Maxwell for 4.2 crores, bolstering their core.
Beyond experienced players, PBKS invested in promising uncapped talent. Nehal Wadhera joined for 4.2 crores, while Vyshak Vijaykumar, Yash Thakur, and Harpreet Brar were signed for 1.8 crores, 1.6 crores, and 1.5 crores respectively. Vishnu Vinod also joined the team for 95 lakhs. This blend of seasoned players and emerging talent positions PBKS for a competitive season ahead.
On the second day of the IPL 2025 auction, Punjab Kings made significant signings, including South African all-rounder Marco Jansen for 7 crores and Australian cricketer Josh Inglis for 2.60 crores. They also added Australian all-rounder Aaron Hardie for 1.25 crores and pacer Xavier Bartlett for 80 lakhs, further strengthening their squad with versatile overseas players.
The team focused on domestic talent by acquiring young Delhi batter Priyansh Arya for 3.8 crores after a fierce bidding war with Delhi Capitals and RCB. Punjab Kings also added uncapped players Musheer Khan and Mumbai all-rounder Suryash Shedge to their roster for 30 lakhs each. These strategic moves introduce a blend of international experience and promising Indian talent to the team, improving their overall balance for the upcoming season.
