PCB Sack Wahab Riaz, Abdul Razzaq After Pakistan's T20 World Cup 2024 Debacle

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sacked Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the senior national selection committee after the team’s horror show in the T20 World Cup 2024. The Men in Green, led by Babar Azam, had a poor run at the recently concluded T20 World Cup held in the West Indies and the USA. Pakistan was knocked out in group stages after finishing third in the group with 2 wins and 2 losses.

Notably, Wahab was appointed as the chief selector for the men’s side last year but was removed from the role and was officially appointed as one of seven selectors. He had also travelled with the Pakistan side to the T20 World Cup as senior team manager.

Meanwhile, Razzaq was part of both the men’s and women’s national selection setup. According to ESPNCricinfo, the PCB is likely to “restructure” the selection committee with a new chief selector.

Turmoil in PCB Continues

Notably, since 2020, the PCB has had six chief selectors Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Wasim, Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Haroon Rashid, and Misbah-ul-Haq each serving in for brief tenures. The current selectors were part of the selection panel with no chief. The Pakistan board is likely to appoint the new Chief selectors before the start of Pakistan’s Test series against Bangladesh.

Pakistan will begin their home season with a two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting August 21. They will also host England for three Tests before traveling to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa for limited-over series later this year.
