Rohit Sharma Headlines India's Unbeaten March Into T20 World Cup Semi-finals With a 24-run Win Over Australia
At the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Saint Lucia on Monday, India defeated Australia in a Super 8 match by a significant difference of 24 runs. With this, India is set to advance to the Semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024, without registering a single defeat in the tournament. The highlight of the match was Rohit Sharma’s blazing knock of 92 runs in just 41 balls which was instrumental in helping India reach a strong total.
India set a target of 205/5 on the board in their given twenty overs mainly due to a splendid innings by Rohit. In response, Australia could only manage a score of 181/7 and hence India’s ‘unbeaten streak’ carried on. India will now be playing against England in the second semi-final.
Australia’s Spirited Effort
While chasing the target, Australia lost their key opener David Warner to Arshdeep Singh in the very first over. Opener Travis Head played an aggressive half-century, but a catch from Axar Patel to send Mitchell Marsh back to the pavilion on 37 ended the partnership.
In his prime form, Glenn Maxwell scored a four and a six in response to Ravindra Jadeja’s deliveries. However, Kuldeep Yadav strategically lured him to attempt a slog sweep and dismissed him for 20 runs. The turning point of the game was Head’s dismissal after scoring 76 runs off 43 balls. Thereafter, the match tilted towards India.
Rohit Sharma’s Outstanding Achievement
Rohit Sharma assessed the pitch conditions and smashed seven fours and eight sixes. He scored 29 runs off an over bowled by Mitchell Starc, with four sixes and a four. This over became Starc’s most expensive over in a T20 International. Pat Cummins, who has consistently taken hat-tricks, was also not spared as Rohit scored a six over deep mid-wicket before the match was interrupted by rain.
Rohit Sharma scored his half-century from merely 19 balls. His endeavour to score a century was disrupted as he got bowled on 92 off 41 by Mitchell Starc. Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube also contributed to the score.
